- MI4 was a department of the British Directorate of Military Intelligence, Section 4, part of the War Office. It was responsible for aerial reconnaissance and interpretation. It developed into the JARIC intelligence agency. The present day successor agency to MI4 is the Defence Intelligence Fusion Centre. (en)
- Le MI4 (abréviation de Military Intelligence, department 4) est un ancien département du renseignement militaire britannique. Ses origines remontent à 1916, pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Le quatrième département du Directoire du Renseignement militaire (Directorate of Military Intelligence, au sein du Bureau de la Guerre) était une unité cartographique, chargée de la préparation de cartes à usage militaire. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le nom de code MI4 est attribué à l'Unité du développement photographique (Photographic Development Unit), établie le 19 janvier 1940. Le 11 juillet, ce service est renommé « Unité d'interprétation photographique », avant de devenir l'Unité d'interprétation centrale le 7 janvier 1941. En 1947, la guerre étant terminée, le service devient le Centre de renseignements photographiques aériens conjoint, rattaché à la Royal Air Force, et le nom de code MI4 tombe en désuétude. Il est l'ancêtre de l'actuel ( (en)). A contrario, les noms de code MI5 et MI6 sont toujours employés, faisant référence respectivement au service de sécurité intérieur et de contre-espionnage, et au service de renseignements extérieurs. « Le nombre et les fonctions précises des sections MI varièrent considérablement » au cours des deux guerres mondiales. MI4 var ett kodnamn som användes för en organisation som genomgick ett antal namnbyten från det att enheten grundades 1940 till dess att kodnamnet slopades 8 september 1947. Från början gick verksamheten under namnet Photographic Development Unit (PDU), men redan under samma år bytte verksamheten namn till Photographic Interpritation Unit (PIU). Under 1941 bytte man namn till Central Interpritation Unit och i och med avskaffandet av kodnamnet bytte verksamheten namn till Joint Air Photographic Intelligence Centre UK (JAPIC (UK)). Verksamheten fortlever, men nu som en del av Defence Intelligence Fusion Centre. Podczas II wojny światowej zajmowała się kartografią dla potrzeb wojska. Oficjalnie została zamknięta 8 września 1947 roku. Dyrektor tego oddziału, Craig Aaron Halsey, obecnie na emeryturze, przeszedł wówczas do bazy marynarki wojennej Whale Island w Portsmouth, którą wciąż odwiedza od czasu do czasu, aby przyjrzeć się programowi szkolenia rekrutów.
