- The Lystrosaurus Assemblage Zone is a tetrapod assemblage zone or biozone which correlates to the upper Adelaide and lower Tarkastad Subgroups of the Beaufort Group, a fossiliferous and geologically important geological Group of the Karoo Supergroup in South Africa. This biozone has outcrops in the south central Eastern Cape (Middelburg, Queenstown, Aliwal North, Nieu-Bethesda) and in the southern and northeastern Free State (Bethulie, Gariep Dam, Mthatha, Harrismith). The Lystrosaurus Assemblage Zone is one of eight biozones found in the Beaufort Group, and is considered to be Early Triassic in age. The name of the biozone refers to Lystrosaurus, a small to medium-sized dicynodont therapsid. It is characterized by the appearance of further Lystrosaurus subspecies which are confined to this biozone. Lystrosaurus maccaigi and Lystrosaurus curvatus are the only two species found outside the Lystrosaurus Assemblage Zone in Upper Permian deposits of the underlying Daptocephalus Assemblage Zone. (en)
- De Lystrosaurus-faunazone is een onderdeel van de Beaufortgroep met fossielen uit het Vroeg-Trias. De Lystrosaurus-faunazone in de Katberg-formatie toont het paleoecosysteem van de Karoo na de Perm-Trias-massa-extinctie. Deze faunazone is vernoemd naar Lystrosaurus, een dicynodont die volgens het fossiele bestand wereldwijd vijftig tot negentig procent van alle grote landdieren uitmaakte in het Indien (251-249.7 miljoen jaar geleden). In de Lystrosaurus-faunazone zijn meer dan tweeduizend fossielen van dit dier gevonden. Ook bijzonder algemeen was het anapside reptiel Procolophon, waarvan meer dan tweehonderd fossielen bekend zijn uit deze zone. De bovenste laag van de Lystrosaurus-faunazone wordt soms wel aangeduid als de Procolophon-subzone. De algemeenste carnivore therapsiden zijn de therocephaliër Moschorhinus (meer dan tien fossielen) en de cynodonten Galesaurus (meer dan tien fossielen) en Thrinaxodon (meer dan tachtig fossielen). Van de aquatische roofdieren zijn de archosauriër Proterosuchus (meer dan tien fossielen) en het amfibie Lydekkerina (meer dan tachtig fossielen) de algemeenste vormen uit de Lystrosaurus-faunazone. Naast verschillende minder algemene amfibieën en therapsiden zijn verder ook de archosauromorph Prolacerta, de eosuchiër en de carnivore reptielen Owenetta en Paliguana bekend uit de Lystrosaurus-faunazone.
