- Die Liga ASOBAL ist die höchste Spielklasse im spanischen Handball. Die Saison 2008/2009 der Liga ASOBAL war die 49. in ihrer Geschichte. Ciudad Real war der Titelverteidiger, die ihren 3. Titel in der vorherigen Saison gewonnen hatten. Die Saison begann am Samstag, dem 13. September 2008 und endete Samstag, am 16. Mai 2009. Der Tabellenführer nach dem 30. Spieltag war automatisch spanischer Meister 2009. Insgesamt 16 Mannschaften kämpften um die Meisterschaft, von denen bereits 14 Mannschaften in der Saison 2007/08 gewetteifert hatten, und von denen zwei aus der División de Honor B aufgestiegen waren. Außerdem gab es einen neuen Match-Ball, der SELECT Super Five, er war der offizielle Spielball für alle Spiele in dieser Saison. (de)
- La Liga ASOBAL 2008-09, o Liga Sabadell Atlántico, por motivos de esponsorización, tuvo el mismo sistema de competición de las anteriores temporadas, 16 equipos enfrentados todos contra todos a doble vuelta. Los dos equipos ascendidos este año fueron el Cuenca 2016, que llevaba unos años sin participar en la máxima categoría del balonmano español, y el BM Alcobendas, que había descendido en la temporada 2005-06. El defensor del título, el BM Ciudad Real, consiguió su tercer título consecutivo cediendo únicamente dos derrotas en toda la temporada. El segundo y tercer clasificados, el FC Barcelona-Borges y el Pevafersa Valladolid, consiguieron una plaza para la siguiente edición de la Liga de Campeones de la EHF, al igual que el Reale Ademar León, que fue invitado por los organizadores.
