- مستوى الوعي (بالإنجليزية: Level of consciousness - مختصرها (LOC)) هي مقياس للتيقظ والاستجابة للتنبيه من الوسط المحيط. تغير مستوى الوعي (بالإنجليزية: Altered level of consciousness) هو التغير في درجة اليقظة. المستويات المعتدلة في انخفاض مستوى الوعي أو اليقظة يمكن تصنيفها خمولا. الأشخاص المصابون بهذه الحالة يمكنهم التيقظ بصعوبة. أما الأشخاص المصابون بتبليد الإحساس فهؤلاء مصابون بانخفاض أكبر في درجة الوعي وقد لا يمكنهم أن يتيقظوا بشكل تام. أما الأشخاص الذين لا يمكنهم التيقظ ويعانون من حالة شبيهة بالنوم فهم مصابون بالذهول. أما الغيبوبة فهي حالة غياب القدرة على أداء أي عمل إرادي وهي حالة فقدان وعي عميقة. إن مقياس غلاسكو للغيبوبة هو أداة مصممة لقياس درجة الوعي. - An altered level of consciousness is any measure of arousal other than normal. Level of consciousness (LOC) is a measurement of a person's arousability and responsiveness to stimuli from the environment. A mildly depressed level of consciousness or alertness may be classed as lethargy; someone in this state can be aroused with little difficulty. People who are obtunded have a more depressed level of consciousness and cannot be fully aroused. Those who are not able to be aroused from a sleep-like state are said to be stuporous. Coma is the inability to make any purposeful response. Scales such as the Glasgow coma scale have been designed to measure the level of consciousness. An altered level of consciousness can result from a variety of factors, including alterations in the chemical environment of the brain (e.g. exposure to poisons or intoxicants), insufficient oxygen or blood flow in the brain, and excessive pressure within the skull. Prolonged unconsciousness is understood to be a sign of a medical emergency. A deficit in the level of consciousness suggests that both of the cerebral hemispheres or the reticular activating system have been injured. A decreased level of consciousness correlates to increased morbidity (sickness) and mortality (death). Thus it is a valuable measure of a patient's medical and neurological status. In fact, some sources consider level of consciousness to be one of the vital signs. (en)

Bewustzijnsniveau is een aanduiding voor de mate waarin iemand alert is en reageert op stimuli uit de omgeving. Een licht verminderde alertheid of bewustzijn wordt soms aangeduid met de term "lethargie". Een lethargisch persoon is nog vrij makkelijk te wekken. Iemand die lijdt aan stupor kan niet worden gewekt vanuit een slapende toestand. Iemand in een coma kan niet reageren op stimuli. Er bestaan hulpmiddelen om het bewustzijnsniveau van een persoon te concretiseren zoals met de Glasgow-comaschaal. Een veranderd bewustzijnsniveau kan worden veroorzaakt door veel verschillende factoren, waaronder vergiftiging, zuurstofgebrek in de hersenen, een verminderde bloedtoevoer, of een verhoogde intracraniële druk. Langdurige bewusteloosheid wordt algemeen beschouwd als een gevaarlijke toestand, die zo snel mogelijk moet worden verholpen. Pessoas que estão entorpecidas têm um nível de consciência mais deprimido e não podem ser totalmente despertas. Aqueles que não conseguem ser despertos de um estado semelhante ao do sono são considerados estuporos. O coma é a incapacidade de dar uma resposta proposital. Um nível alterado de consciência pode resultar de uma variedade de fatores, incluindo alterações no ambiente químico do cérebro (por exemplo, exposição a venenos ou tóxicos), oxigênio insuficiente ou fluxo sanguíneo no cérebro e pressão excessiva no crânio.
