- The Lepontine dome or Lepontin dome is a region of tectonic uplift in the Swiss part of the Alps. It is located in the Lepontine Alps and Glarus Alps. The Alps north of the Periadriatic Seam are usually divided into three large nappe complexes. From bottom to top these are the Helvetic, Penninic and Austroalpine nappes. East of the dome all three are found on top of each other. The same counts for the region west of the dome, if the Sesia unit is seen as part of the Austroalpine nappes. The dome itself however only shows Penninic and Helvetic (the boundary between the two is still disputed) rocks. Apparently the uplift of the dome caused the upper Austroalpine material to be totally eroded away. The creation of the dome was caused by a phase of east-west directed extension in the Miocene that occurred throughout the Eastern and Central Alps. This extensional phase was probably a result of slab detachment in the upper mantle. Similar large extensional structures appear in more places in the Alps, examples are the Hohe Tauern window and the smaller Engadin and . (en)
- Il Duomo Lepontino (detto anche Cupola Lepontina) è una regione di sollevamento tettonico situata nelle Alpi Centrali a cavallo tra Italia e Svizzera. L'area è caratterizzata da un'impronta metamorfica di alto grado. La parte delle Alpi a nord della Linea Insubrica è solitamente divisa in tre grandi complessi di falde: dal basso verso l'alto questi sono l'Elvetico, il Pennidico e l'Austroalpino.Ad est della duomo Lepontino tutte e tre si trovano uno sopra l'altro; lo stesso vale per la regione ad ovest della struttura, se l'unità Sesia-Lanzo è vista come parte delle falde Austroalpine. Nel duomo invece affiorano solo Pennidico ed Elvetico (il confine tra i due è ancora controverso). Pare che il sollevamento del duomo abbia causato la totale erosione della parte superiore del duomo costituita dalla falda Austroalpina. La creazione di questa struttura è stato causato da una fase estensiva con direzione est-ovest verificatasi durante il Miocene in tutta le Alpi Centrali ed Orientali, probabilmente a seguito di distacco della crosta dal mantello superiore. Simili strutture estensionali si hanno in varie zone delle Alpi, si ricordano ad esempio la finestra degli Alti Tauri, la finestra dell'Engadina e la finestra di Rechnitz. (it)

Ten noorden van de Periadriatische lijn worden de Alpen geologisch verdeeld in drie overschuivingseenheden, die nappes genoemd worden. Van beneden naar onder zijn dit de Helvetische, Penninische en Austroalpiene nappes. Ten oosten van de dome worden alle drie de groepen gevonden. Als de Sesia eenheid als deel van de Austroalpiene nappes wordt gezien geldt dat ook voor het gebied ten westen van de dome. In de dome zelf dagzomen alleen Penninische en Helvetische (de grens tussen beiden is nog een onderwerp van debat) eenheden. Blijkbaar heeft de uplift ter plekke gezorgd voor het totaal weg eroderen van het Austroalpiene materiaal. De dome werd gevormd tijdens een fase van oost-west gerichte extensie in de Centrale en Oostelijke Alpen in het Mioceen. Deze fase van extensie was waarschijnlijk het gevolg van in de bovenmantel. Gerelateerde extensionele structuren komen op meer plekken voor in de Oostelijke Alpen: het Hohe Tauern venster en enkele kleinere vensters bijvoorbeeld zijn ontstaan in dezelfde fase. (nl)
