- Land Rover Defender je off-road vyráběný britskou automobilkou Land Rover. Vyráběl se od roku 1983, i když název Defender je používán až od roku 1990. Výroba skončila v lednu roku 2016. Na trh se vrátil v nové generaci v roce 2019. Jako jediný z řad Land Roverů má Defender širokou škálu pohonných jednotek. Z benzínových to jsou: Řadový čtyřválec 2,25 l, řadový čtyřválec 2,5 l, řadový šestiválec 2,8 l od BMW, karburátorový osmiválec do 3,5 l a osmiválec do V 4.01 EFI. Dieselové agregáty začínaly u atmosférického řadového čtyřválce 2,5 l, další byl o stejném obsahu, ale přeplňovaný turbodmychadlem. Na začátku 90. let přišli s motorem s přímým vstřikem paliva TDi. Obsah a počet válců nezměněn. První generace je také označována jako 200 TDi. V roce 1994 byl motor lehce inovován, hlavně jeho komponenty a proto nese označení 300 TDI. Motory s 300 TDi z pozdější produkce měly také recirkulaci výfukových plynů a katalyzátor. V roce 1998 se začal používat první elektronicky řízený řadový pětiválec se systémem vstřikování paliva vačky – tryska označovaný jako TD5, který se používá dodneška. První motory TD5 byly bez katalyzátoru, od r. 2002 byl přidán katalyzátor a recirkulace výfukových plynů z důvodu plnění EURO2. Celá karoserie je sestavená z jednotlivých dílů, které jsou k sobě šroubované nebo nýtované. Defender byl vždy konstruován jako pracovní auto a pro armádu. Ročně se vyrábělo kolem 25 tis. Defenderů v různých modifikacích. Označovány jsou délky šasí v palcích, proto Defender 90, 110 a 130.(Převzato: Mejznar-forum) Na podzim roku 1989 byl Land Rover lehce pozměněn (rozměry se neměnily) a přejmenován na Defender s modely 90, 110 a 130. V prosinci 1995 byly dodány na základě vítězství v soutěži první Defendery také do armády České republiky. Defender se stal v Británii v roce 1990 nejprodávanějším 4x4. V roce 1998 se jednoduché motory TDi nemohly vyrovnat s požadavky evropských limitů hluku a emisí. Reakcí byl moderní TD BMW Td5 se systémem čerpadlo – tryska. Hlavně pro expediční účely a země třetího světa zůstala v Brazílii a Argentině zachovány výroba s TDi. Žebřinový rám podvozku, tuhé nápravy, pár podélných ramen, panhardská tyč vpředu, trojúhelníkové rameno vzadu a všude vinuté pružiny zůstaly zachovány. V terénu je Defender králem s optimálně laděným podvozkem, redukcí a světlou výškou. Pomáhá také příplatkové ABS kombinované s protiskluzovým systémem ETC, který ale absenci plnohodnotných uzávěrek nahradit plně nedokáže a ruční závěrkou mezinápravového diferenciálu. Brodivost auta je 65 cm. Defender 90 SW/110 SW/130: nájezdové úhly 48°/50°/50° a 49°/34,5°/34°. Defender má stoupavost 45°, boční náklon 45°/30°/. - The Land Rover Defender (initially introduced as the Land Rover 110 / One Ten, and in 1984 joined by the Land Rover 90 / Ninety, plus the new, extra-length Land Rover 127 in 1985) is a series of British off-road cars and pickup trucks. They consistently have four-wheel drive, and were developed in the 1980s from the original Land Rover series which was launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show in April 1948. Following the 1989 introduction of the Land Rover Discovery, the term 'Land Rover' became the name of a broader marque, and thus no longer worked as the name of a specific model; thus in 1990 Land Rover renamed the 90 and 110 as Defender 90 and Defender 110 respectively. The 127 became the Defender 130. The vehicle, a British equivalent of the Second World War derived (Willys) Jeep, gained a worldwide reputation for ruggedness and versatility. Using a steel ladder chassis and an aluminium alloy bodywork, the Land Rover originally used detuned versions of Rover engines. The original Defender is still being produced in developing countries despite the arrival of the Land Rover Defender (L663). Though the Defender was not a new generation design, it incorporated significant changes, compared to the series Land Rovers, such as adopting coil springs front and rear, as opposed to all leaf springs on the previous; except for retaining rear leaf springs on high capacity (payload) models. Coil springs offered both better ride quality and improved axle articulation. Adding a lockable centre differential to the transfer case gave the Defender permanent (on-road) four-wheel-drive capability. Both changes were derived from the Range Rover, and the interiors were also modernised. Externally, a full-length bonnet and full-width integrated grille and headlights, combined with (finally) a single-piece windscreen, plus widened wheel arches that covered new, wider-track axles were the most noticeable changes. Initially the engineering department conserved a part-time 4WD system, like on previous models, but it failed to sell any longer, and this option was immediately dropped in 1984. While the engine was carried over from the Series III, a new series of modern and more powerful engines was progressively introduced. Even when ignoring the series Land Rovers and perhaps ongoing licence products, the 90/110 and Defender models' 33-year production run were ranked as the sixteenth longest single-generation car in history in 2020. In 2020, Jaguar Land Rover introduced the first all new generation of Land Rover Defenders, switching from body on chassis to integrated bodywork and from live, rigid axles to all around independent suspension. The range was originally limited to just two wheelbase lengths before a third, the Defender 130, was announced in 2022. The new Defender series is only available in closed, estate car bodies. (en)

La ditta reagì costruendo un veicolo totalmente diverso: il fuoristrada Land Rover, con una nuova carrozzeria ma con il motore delle vetture precedenti. Il primo veicolo, chiamato Land Rover, fu disegnato da Maurice Wilks nel 1947 in Inghilterra, ispirato dalle Jeep utilizzate dagli americani durante la Seconda guerra mondiale. Per questo, il primo modello realizzato si basava proprio su una struttura della Jeep.Caratteristica base fin dal primo modello lanciato ad Amsterdam il 30 aprile 1948 fu la trazione integrale che permise a questi veicoli di affrontare terreni anche molto accidentati. Un'altra caratteristica base fu la carrozzeria in alluminio, meno esposta alla corrosione e, all'epoca, non sottoposta a contingentamento dal governo britannico. Dit is ideaal wanneer onderhoud in het veld nodig is. De wagen voldeed niet langer aan de Europese normen en daarom werd in 2015 het einde van de productie aangekondigd. Op 29 januari 2016 rolde de laatste Defender van de lopende band. In 2011 werd een prototype van een opvolger voor de Defender getoond.
