- Am 30. August 1978, während des Kalten Krieges, entführte der Ost-Berliner Kellner Hans Detlef Alexander Tiede ein Flugzeug der polnischen Fluggesellschaft LOT auf einem Linienflug von Danzig (Polen) nach Berlin-Schönefeld (damals DDR) und zwang die Besatzung der Tupolew Tu-134 zur Landung in Berlin-Tempelhof (damals West-Berlin). The hijackers from East Germany (GDR) were seeking political asylum in West Germany (FRG). The plane landed safely, and the primary hijacker was tried and convicted by a West German jury in the specially convened United States Court for Berlin and sentenced to time served, the nine months he had already served during pretrial detention.
