- Kirk ist ein aus dem Schottischen stammendes Wort, das Kirche bedeutet. Als Eigenname kommt es sowohl im Scots, schottischen Englisch, Ulster Scots und einigen englischen Dialekten vor. Es wird angenommen, dass der Begriff als Lehnwort wie das deutsche Worte „Kirche“ auf das aus der Koine stammende Wort „κυριακόν (δωμα)“ zurückzuführen ist und als „Haus des Herrn“ übersetzt werden kann. In Schottland selbst wird damit auch die Church of Scotland als the Kirk bezeichnet. Der Begriff High Kirk wird stellenweise von Kirchengemeinden der Church of Scotland benutzt deren Kirchengebäude vor der Reformation als Kathedrale bezeichnet wurden. So wird beispielsweise die St Mungo’s Cathedral auch als High Kirk of Glasgow und die St Giles’ Cathedral als High Kirk of Edinburgh bezeichnet.
