- Karl Unterkircher (27 August 1970 – 15 July 2008) was an Italian mountaineer. He is mostly known for opening new mountain routes. Unterkircher was born in Sëlva. In 2004, he was the first alpinist to climb the two highest peaks on Earth (Mount Everest and K2) without oxygen in the same year (within 63 days) he made the second ascent of Mount Genyen, China, (first ascent by Japanese in 1987) and the first ascent of the North face of Gasherbrum II (together with Daniele Bernasconi and Michele Compagnoni). He also climbed the , Nepal, (together with Hans Kammerlander). He received several awards including the Cavaliere Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana. On 15 July 2008 he fell into a crevasse during an attempt to open a new route to the top of Himalayan mountain Nanga Parbat and is presumed dead. Ele é conhecido principalmente por ter aberto novas rotas em montanha. Em 2004, foi o primeiro alpinista a escalar,sem oxigênio no mesmo ano, os dois picos mais altos da Terra (monte Everest e K2). Karl fez a segunda ascensão do Monte Genyen, na China, (primeira ascensão com uma equipe japonesa em 1987) e a primeira ascensão da face norte do Gasherbrum II (juntamente com Daniele Bernasconi e Compagnoni Michele), também escalou o Jasemba no Nepal com Hans Kammerlander. Ele recebeu vários prêmios, incluindo a de Cavaleiro da Ordem do Mérito da República Italiana. Em 15 de julho de 2008, caiu numa crevasse durante uma tentativa de abrir uma nova rota para o topo da montanha Nanga Parbat no Himalaia e foi dado como morto.
