Zwyciężył na w biegu 1500 metrów na mistrzostwach Europy w 1969 w Atenach. Na igrzyskach Brytyjskiej Wspólnoty Narodów w 1970 w Edynburgu zajął 5. miejsce w tej konkurencji. Whetton był mistrzem Wielkiej Brytanii w biegu na 1 milę w 1968, a wicemistrzem w 1967 na milę i w 1969 na 1500 m. W hali był mistrzem AAA na milę w latach 1963-1968 i na 1500 m w 1969. (pl)
