The Java class was a class of light cruisers of the Royal Netherlands Navy, named after the island of Java in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). Originally, three ships were planned: HNLMS Java, HNLMS Sumatra, and HNLMS Celebes. Celebes was intended to be the flagship of the naval commander in the Dutch East Indies, and therefore she was slightly bigger than the other two ships.

  • The Java class was a class of light cruisers of the Royal Netherlands Navy, named after the island of Java in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). Originally, three ships were planned: HNLMS Java, HNLMS Sumatra, and HNLMS Celebes. Celebes was intended to be the flagship of the naval commander in the Dutch East Indies, and therefore she was slightly bigger than the other two ships. However, the contract was cancelled with 30 tons of material already prepared (A new ship, HNLMS de Ruyter was later built to fill that place). The class was designed by the Germaniawerft in Kiel, but constructed in the Netherlands. They were designed to counter the Japanese reconnaissance cruisers of the Chikuma class of 1912, and therefore fitted with 10,150 mm (5.9 inch) guns. However, these were not turret-mounted, and by the time the cruisers were launched (Sumatra in 1920, Java in 1921), they had already become obsolete. Nonetheless, both Sumatra and Java were still active at the outbreak of World War II. (en)

Oorspronkelijk zou de serie uit drie schepen bestaan, maar het derde schip werd afbesteld. Het ontwerp van de Javaklasse was afkomstig van de Duitse Germaniawerf De bouw vond plaats bij de Koninklijke Maatschappij de Schelde te Vlissingen en de Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij te Amsterdam. Het ontwerp was een reactie op de op de Japanse licht kruisers van de Chikumaklasse. Door de lange bouwtijd, mede veroorzaakt door de moeizame levering van onderdelen tijdens de oorlog en de snelle technische ontwikkelingen waren de schepen bij hun in dienst stelling al verouderd. Zo stonden de kanonnen nog opgesteld achter schilden, terwijl (gesloten) geschutkoepels voor dit type kaliber al gebruikelijk was in die tijd. Ook stonden 6 van de 10 kanonnen niet opgesteld op de lengte-as, maar aan stuur- en bakboorzijde van de bovenbouw. Daardoor konden de schepen bij het afgeven van vuur over de zijden slechts 7 van de 10 kanonnen gebruiken. (nl)
