- Iwate (磐手) was the second and last Izumo-class armored cruiser (Sōkō jun'yōkan) built for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) in the late 1890s. As Japan lacked the industrial capacity to build such warships herself, the ship was built in Britain. She participated in most of the naval battles of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905. The ship was moderately damaged during the Battle of Port Arthur, the Battle off Ulsan, and the Battle of Tsushima. Iwate played a minor role in World War I and began the first of her many training cruises for naval cadets in 1916, a task that would last until the end of 1939. The ship continued to conduct training in home waters throughout the Pacific War. Iwate was sunk by American carrier aircraft during the attack on Kure in July 1945. Her wreck was refloated and scrapped in 1946–1947. (en)

- L'Iwate è stato un incrociatore corazzato della Marina imperiale giapponese, appartenente alla e così chiamato in onore della città omonima. Fu varato dal cantiere navale di Armstrong Whitworth di Elswick nel settembre 1899, poiché all'epoca l'Impero giapponese non deteneva ancora ampie capacità cantieristiche. Inserito nella 2ª Flotta, partecipò alla guerra russo-giapponese, combattendo sia nella battaglia del Mare del Giappone, sia nella decisiva battaglia di Tsushima. Fu poi distaccato nel 1915 e servì nelle acque del Mar Mediterraneo e dell'Oceano Indiano, senza tuttavia entrare in contatto con forze navali nemiche. A partire dal primo dopoguerra fu riassegnato come nave da difesa costiera e nel corso degli anni venti e trenta effettuò viaggi in America, Europa e regioni dell'Oceano Pacifico con a bordo i cadetti di numerose classi licenziate dall'Accademia navale di Etajima: in questo periodo fu anche sbarcato parte dell'armamento principale e le macchine furono depotenziate e scambiate con modelli più recenti. Non ebbe alcuna parte nella seconda guerra mondiale e, declassato a nave addestramento, continuò a svolgere esercitazioni nelle acque nazionali, venendo dotato di armi contraeree. Danneggiato superficialmente nel marzo 1945 al largo di Kure, fu invece quasi colpito da tre bombe nella rada della città il 24 luglio che causarono numerose infiltrazioni: in ventiquattr'ore si allagò e affondò. L'incrociatore fu recuperato dalle acque basse e demolito nell'immediato dopoguerra. (it)
