- ولد جيمس لايدلو ماكسويل في اسكتلندا في 18 اذار 1836 وتوفي في آذار عام 1921 ويعتبر أول مبشر مسيحي برسبتاري لفورموزا وهو الاسم القديم الذي اطلقه البرتغاليون على تايوان ويعني الجزيرة الجميلة) خلال «عهد تشينغ في تايوان» وخدم مع البعثة الإنجليزية البرسبتارية. درس ماكسويل الطب في جامعة إدنبرة حيث أكمل درجته العلمية عام 1858 بأطروحة تحمل عنوان الكيمياء وعلم وظائف الأعضاء للطحال. عمل في لندن في مستشفى برومبتون وفي مستشفى برمنغهام العام، وكان عضوا قديما في الكنيسة البرسبتارية في شارع برود قبل أن ترسله الكنيسة البرسبتارية في إنجلترا (الموجودة حاليا ضمن الكنيسة الاصلاحية المتحدة) عام 1864، وتبرّع بطابعة صغيرة للكنيسة والتي استخدمت فيما بعد لطباعة أخبار كنيسة تايوان. أنشأ جيمس أول كنيسة برسبتارية في تايوان بناء على طلب كلا من المبشريّن اتش. ال. ماكينزي وكارستيرز دوقلس في 16 حزيران 1868 وتحتفل الكنيسة بهذا التاريخ كذكرى سنوية لها وتركزت مهمته في البداية على العاصمة تايوان فو آنذاك (حاليا مدينة تاينان) وانتقل بالقرب من كايجين في عام 1868 والتي تعد حاليا جزءا من كاوشيونغ حيث يوجد مكان عمله، وأصبح مرحّبا أكثر في مجالي الطب والتبشير معا. ونصح الرائد الكندي والمبشر البرسبتاري جورج ليزلي ماكاي في بدايات عام 1872 أن يبدأ عمله في تايوان الشمالية بالقرب من تامسوي. تزوج من ماري ان غودال (المتوفية في يناير 1918) في 7 نيسان 1868 في هونغ كونغ وأنجبا طفلين، جون بريستون وجيمس لايدلو الابن اللذان أصبحا أطباء ومبشرين فيما بعد. تقاعد في لندن عام 1885 حيث أسس فيها الجمعية التبشيرية الطبية وشغل منصب سكرتير فيها أيضا. وأشرف هو وأبنائه على بناء مستشفى«سن لاو» في تاينان وهي أول مستشفى اتسمت بالطابع الغربي في تايوان. خدم جيمس ماكسويل الابن في مستشفى تاينان من عام 1900 وحتى عام 1923 خلال الحقبة اليابانية لتايوان. المراجع http://www.mundus.ac.uk/cats/45/1154.htm https://web.archive.org/web/20070311060228/http://www.pct.org.tw/english/2005news/new_2779_2.htm (ar)
- James Laidlaw Maxwell Senior (Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Má Ngá-kok; Chinese: 馬雅各; born 18 March 1836 in Scotland – March 1921) was the first Presbyterian missionary to Formosa (Qing-era Taiwan). He served with the English Presbyterian Mission. Maxwell studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, completing his degree in 1858 with the thesis The Chemistry and Physiology of the Spleen. He worked in London at Brompton Hospital and at the Birmingham General Hospital. He was an elder in the Broad Street Presbyterian Church, Birmingham before being sent to Taiwan by the Presbyterian Church of England (now within the United Reformed Church) in 1864. He donated a small printing press to the church which was later used to print the Taiwan Church News. On 16 June 1865, at the urging of missionaries H. L. Mackenzie and Carstairs Douglas, he established the first Presbyterian church in Taiwan, this date now celebrated by the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan as its anniversary. First his mission centred in the then-capital Taiwan Fu (now Tainan City); in 1868 he moved near Cijin (now part of Kaohsiung) where his work, both medical and missionary, became more welcomed. In early 1872 he advised Canadian Presbyterian missionary pioneer George Leslie Mackay to start his work in northern Taiwan, near Tamsui. He married Mary Anne Goodall (died January 1918) of Handsworth on 7 April 1868 in Hong Kong. They had two sons, John Preston and , both of whom later also became medical missionaries. He retired in London in 1885 where he formed and became the first secretary of the Medical Missionary Association. He and his sons oversaw the construction of in Tainan, the first western-style hospital in Taiwan. The younger J. L. Maxwell served in the Tainan hospital from 1900 to 1923, during Taiwan's Japanese era. (en)
