- The year 2008 was declared the International Year of the Potato by the United Nations, noting that the potato is a staple food in the diet of the world's population, and affirming the need to focus world attention on the role that the potato can play in providing food security and eradicating poverty. Food and Agriculture Organization was invited to facilitate its implementation. The corresponding resolution adopted on 25 November 2005 by the Food and Agriculture Organization, which was to facilitate the implementation of the year, affirmed "the need to revive public awareness of the relationship that exists between poverty, food security, malnutrition and the potential contribution of the potato to defeating hunger." This was one of many international observances declared for specific days, months and years. The year 2008 was shared with the International Year of Sanitation. It was hoped that International Year designation would do for the potato what the International Year of Rice (2004) did for that food staple, namely, inspire exhibits, educational programs, films, publications and greater public awareness of multi-national efforts on behalf of our food resources. The year 2008 was also designated the National Year of the Potato in Peru. (en)

L'organisation des Nations unies pour l'alimentation et l'agriculture (FAO) est chargée de son organisation. L'année internationale de la pomme de terre a été inaugurée officiellement au siège des Nations unies, à New York, le 18 octobre 2007. La résolution correspondante, adoptée le 25 novembre 2005 par la FAO, dont le rôle est de faciliter la célébration de l’Année internationale en collaboration avec les gouvernements, affirme la nécessité de « sensibiliser à nouveau le public aux rapports qui existent entre la pauvreté, la sécurité alimentaire, la malnutrition et la contribution potentielle de la pomme de terre à la lutte contre la faim ». C'est une des nombreuses manifestations internationales déclarées pour des périodes (jours, mois, ans) spécifiques. L'année 2008 est également l'Année internationale de l'assainissement et l'Année internationale des langues. On espère que cette désignation d'une année internationale donnera pour la pomme de terre les mêmes résultats que ceux obtenus pour un autre aliment de base lors de l' en 2004. C'est-à-dire concrètement qu'elle devrait inspirer des expositions, des programmes éducatifs, des films, publications, et provoquer une prise de conscience dans le grand public des efforts entrepris au niveau international pour développer les ressources alimentaires de la planète. 2008 est aussi l'année de la pomme de terre au Pérou. - O Ano Internacional da Batata (2008) foi declarado pela Resolução 60/191 da Assembleia Geral da Organização das Nações Unidas, de 22 de Dezembro de 2005. Sua organização dar-se-á pela FAO - órgão da ONU responsável - em colaboração com os governos, o Programa de Desenvolvimento da ONU, o Grupo Consultivo dos Centros de Pesquisas Agrícolas Internacionais e organizações privadas afeitas. A Resolução assinala que "a batata é um alimento principal na dieta da população mundial"; visa "focalizar a atenção mundial no papel que a batata possa ter para prover a segurança alimentar junto às populações pobres". A resolução correspondente, adotada pela FAO em 25 de Dezembro de 2005, afirma haver "a necessidade de reacender a consciência pública da relação existente entre a pobreza, segurança alimentar, desnutrição e a contribuição potencial da batata para vencer a fome." Espera-se que a nomeação deste Ano Internacional faça para a batata aquilo que o Ano Internacional do Arroz de 2004 fez para aquele cereal, isto é, provoque exposições, programas educacionais, filmes, publicações e maior consciência pública da necessidade do esforço internacional na solução dos problemas alimentares.
