The postmodernist narrative, in the form of a frame story, is about the reader trying to read a book called If on a winter's night a traveler. Each chapter is divided into two sections. The first section of each chapter is in second person, and describes the process the reader goes through to attempt to read the next chapter of the book he or she is reading. The second half is the first part of a new book that the reader ("you") finds. The second half is always about something different from the previous ones. En este libro un Lector comienza a leer la última novela de Italo Calvino Si una noche de invierno un viajero, cuando un error de encuadernacion no le permite continuar. La búsqueda del ejemplar correcto lo conduce a Fuera del poblado de Malbork, que también empieza una Lectora, Ludmilla. Así, una serie consecutiva de accidentes los lleva a descubrir fragmentos de diez historias diferentes, que no llegan a finalizar. En este proceso, el Lector descubre una red de falsificación liderada por un hombre enamorado de Ludmilla, en la que él se había interesado. Luego, junto con otros lectores, descubren diferentes formas de goce de la lectura que el falsificador había intentado frustrar. El libro se divide en capítulos en los que se desarrolla paralelamente la historia del Lector y Ludmilla, y por otra parte, la exposición de los fragmentos de las novelas con los que tiene su encuentro. La búsqueda para encontrar el desenlace de las historias es el motor de desarrollo de este relato. Encontramos en esta obra cómo los universos de escritor, lector y artista se tejen alrededor del libro. (es)

- Se una notte d'inverno un viaggiatore è un romanzo di Italo Calvino pubblicato nel 1979. In esso Calvino narra la storia di un Lettore che, nel tentativo di leggere un romanzo (intitolato appunto Se una notte d'inverno un viaggiatore), è per ragioni sempre differenti costretto a interrompere la lettura del libro che sta leggendo e intraprendere la lettura di un altro. L'opera, narrata per la maggior parte in seconda persona, diventa quindi una riflessione sulle molteplici possibilità offerte dalla letteratura e sulla impossibilità di giungere a una conoscenza della realtà. Il romanzo ha avuto un notevole successo in Italia e all'estero, specialmente negli Stati Uniti, dove è stato letto immediatamente come esempio di letteratura postmoderna. Appartiene quindi al genere del metaromanzo, un romanzo che si interroga sulla sua stessa natura. (it)
