- Die Hoff-Krabbe (Kiwa tyleri) ist ein 2010 entdeckter und 2015 beschriebener Mittelkrebs aus der Familie der Kiwaidae. Die 2010 im südlichen Atlantik nahe der Antarktis in über 2000 Metern Tiefe entdeckte Art besiedelt heiße Quellen, die aus kleinen Schloten mit Hochdruck mineralhaltiges Wasser in die eisige Tiefsee abgeben. Die Hoff-Krabbe besiedelt somit einen sehr ähnlichen Lebensraum wie die verwandte Yeti-Krabbe im Pazifik. Bis zu 600 Hoff-Krabben konnten auf einem Quadratmeter gezählt werden. Die Quellen sind hydrothermalen Ursprungs, die Schlote sind häufig spitzkeglig geformt. Das ausströmende schwefelsaure Wasser kann Temperaturen von 380 Grad Celsius erreichen. Die Krabben siedeln sich in quellnahen Bereichen an, wo die Wassertemperatur zwischen 4 und 30 Grad Celsius variiert. (de)

The crustacean was given its English nickname in 2010 by UK deep-sea scientists aboard the RRS James Cook, owing to resemblance between its dense covering of setae on the ventral surface of the exoskeleton and the hairy chest of the actor David Hasselhoff. The 2010 expedition to explore hydrothermal vents on the East Scotia Ridge was the second of three expeditions to the Southern Ocean by the UK led research consortium, ChEsSo (Chemosynthetic Ecosystems of the Southern Ocean). - Kiwa tyleri est la troisième espèce de galathée yéti décrite, en 2015. Comme ses cousines, Kiwa hirsuta et Kiwa puravida, c'est un crustacé marin vivant à grande profondeur, au corps blanc couvert de poils colonisés par des bactéries chimiotrophes qui sont à la base de son alimentation. Kiwa tyleri vit à proximité des cheminées hydrothermales. C'est la seule galathée yéti connue à ce jour dans l'océan glacial Antarctique. Elle se distingue de ses cousines par sa carapace lisse, dépourvue d'aspérités sur le dos, et plus trapue. Contrairement à ses cousines, elles présente aussi la particularité de se rassembler en très grandes communautés : dans les sites où elle est rencontrée, elle constitue l'espèce dominante de la macrofaune. Elle est aussi adaptée à des eaux globalement plus chaudes, si bien qu'on la trouve beaucoup plus près des sources hydrothermales. (fr)
