La sezione calcistica si separò dal resto del club e scelse un nuovo nome, Olympique Lyonnais. Il nuovo sodalizio nacque ufficialmente il 3 agosto 1950. Il primo allenatore era Oscar Heisserer. Il 26 agosto 1950 la squadra esordì battendo il Paris Charenton di fronte a 3.000 spettatori. Nel suo primo mezzo secolo di vita il Lione non riuscì mai a vincere il campionato francese e non fu raro vederlo in Ligue 2. (it)
