- El Handbook of the Mammals of the World (HMW) és un projecte editorial en llengua anglesa i 8 volums de Lynx Edicions, en col·laboració amb i la UICN, que es publicarà entre 2009 i 2016, i que pretén cobrir 5.000 espècies de mamífers, de manera similar al Handbook of the Birds of the World per a les aus. El primer volum, amb una introducció als mamífers a càrrec de , fou publicat el maig de 2009. Dedicat als carnívors, tracta sobre els felins, cànids, ossos, vivèrrids i mustèlids, entre d'altres, fins a un total de 13 famílies, i n'ofereix dades sobre la taxonomia, distribució, hàbitat, reproducció, comportament i estat de conservació. Cobreix un total de 245 espècies, i inclou més de 400 fotografies en color i 257 mapes de distribució, com també 33 làmines en color realitzades per l'artista català . La resta de volums tractaran sobre els mamífers següents:

* Volum 3: Primats
* Volum 4: Mamífers marins
* Volum 5: Marsupials
* Volum 6: Rosegadors

- Das Handbook of the Mammals of the World (HMW) ist eine mehrbändige Enzyklopädie über die Säugetierarten der Erde aus dem Verlagshaus Lynx Edicions. Im Jahr 2009 wurde der erste Band über die Raubtiere veröffentlicht, im Jahr 2019 wurde die Reihe mit dem neunten Band über die Fledertiere abgeschlossen. Jede Säugetierfamilie hat ein umfangreiches Einleitungskapitel, in dem die Systematik, die Morphologie, der Lebensraum, die Kommunikation, das Fortpflanzungsverhalten, das Nahrungsverhalten, das Sozialverhalten, das Verhältnis zum Menschen und der Naturschutz behandelt wird. Ferner gibt es umfangreiches Fotomaterial. Jede Art ist auf einer Bildtafel illustriert, hat einen Volltexteintrag mit den Abschnitten Beschreibung, Lebensraum, Nahrungsverhalten, Fortpflanzungsverhalten, Sozialverhalten und Naturschutz sowie eine Verbreitungskarte. Dies ist das zweite große Buchprojekt von Lynx Edicions seit der Veröffentlichung des Handbook of the Birds of the World im Jahr 1992. Die Herausgeber sind Russell Mittermeier und Don E. Wilson in Zusammenarbeit mit Conservation International, der Texas A&M University und der IUCN. Don E. Wilson war bereits im Jahr 2005 Herausgeber des Standardwerks Mammal Species of the World. (de)

Los 8 volúmenes serán publicados a partir de 2009 cada familia de mamíferos se evaluó en una introducción de texto completo con fotografías y cada especie tiene una cuenta de texto con un mapa de la distribución y las ilustraciones en un plato. Este es el segundo gran proyecto por Lynx Edicions desde el lanzamiento de la Guía de las Aves del Mundo en 1992 Los principales editores son Russell Mittermeier y en asociación con Conservación Internacional , la Universidad Texas A & M y la UICN. Jest to drugi duży projekt Lynx Edicions, po wydawanej od 1992 roku serii publikacji książkowych opisujących wszystkie gatunki ptaków: Handbook of the Birds of the World. Głównymi redaktorami opracowania są: i Don E. Wilson we współpracy z Conservation International, Texas A&M University i IUCN. Don E. Wilson jest także edytorem szczegółowego spisu wszystkich gatunków ssaków: Mammal Species of the World. Rozmiary poszczególnych tomów to 31 cm na 24 cm. Uzupełnieniem serii jest 2-tomowe wydawnictwo Illustrated Checklist of the Mammals of the World, opublikowane w 2020 roku, zawierające zaktualizowaną taksonomię, uaktualnione zasięgi występowania, statusy zagrożenia IUCN itp.
