Il primo attacco mise fuori uso la propulsione (che fu successivamente ripristinata ma con soli 17,5 nodi di velocità) e parte dell'armamento oltre a distruggere l'hangar. Il secondo attacco colpì la nave a poppa rendendo a quel punto incontrollabili gli incendi a bordo. L'Ardent si arenò su un basso fondale nella baia di Grantham Sound. La fregata HMS Yarmouth prestò soccorso recuperando i superstiti. L'Ardent continuò ad ardere finché affondò la mattina del 22 maggio. Durante gli attacchi e i successivi incendi persero la vita 22 uomini dell'equipaggio. (it)
