- Grand Portage National Monument is a United States National Monument located on the north shore of Lake Superior in northeastern Minnesota that preserves a vital center of fur trade activity and Anishinaabeg Ojibwe heritage. The area became one of the British Empire's four main fur trading centers in North America, along with Fort Niagara, Fort Detroit, and Michilimackinac. The Grand Portage is an 8.5-mile (13.7 km) (2720 rod) footpath which bypasses a set of waterfalls and rapids on the last 20 miles (32 km) of the Pigeon River before it flows into Lake Superior. This path is part of the historic trade route of the French-Canadian voyageurs and coureur des bois between their wintering grounds and their depots to the east. Composed of the Pigeon River and other strategic interior streams, lakes, and portages, this route was of enormous importance in pre-industrial times. It provided quick water access from Canada's settled areas and Atlantic ports to the fur-rich Rupert's Land and the North-Western Territory. Some 50 miles (80 km) upstream from Lake Superior, this trade route crosses the Height of Land Portage, on the Northern continental divide, and connects South Lake in the Pigeon River/Great Lakes watershed with North Lake of the Rainy River watershed. Grand Portage therefore was an essential link between the drainage basin of the Nelson River to Hudson Bay and that of the Saint Lawrence River to the Atlantic Ocean. (en)
- Monument national du Grand Portage, est un monument national américain situé dans une forêt boréale sur la rive nord du Lac Supérieur au nord-est du Minnesota dans le but de préserver un centre vital de l’activité de la Traite des fourrures mais aussi un héritage de la culture locale Ojibwé. Le Grand Portage lui-même est un sentier pédestre qui contourne plusieurs chutes d’eau sur la rivière Pigeon à quelques kilomètres en amont de l’endroit où la rivière se jette dans le lac Supérieur. Ce chemin fait partie de la route commerciale historique empruntée par les coureurs des bois entre leurs camps d’hiver où ils chassaient et leurs dépôts situés plus à l’est qu’ils approvisionnaient durant l’été. Cette route, qui est composée de la rivière Pigeon et d’autres voies d’eau mais aussi de plusieurs zones de portages, revêtait une importance considérable à l’époque préindustrielle. La route reliait en effet l’intérieur du Canada aux premières colonies situées plus à l’Est. Sur une longueur de 80 km à partir du lac Supérieur, cette route traversait les hauteurs reliant le bassin hydrographique de la rivière Pigeon à celui plus au nord de la rivière à la Pluie. Cette route permettait en fait de passer le dénivelé des Laurentides. Ce chemin crée une liaison entre le bassin versant de l’océan Arctique et celui des Grands Lacs menant par le fleuve Saint-Laurent jusqu’à océan Atlantique. (fr)

Ojibwe-indianerna började tidigt med handel med bland annat engelsmän och fransmän och befolkning längre norrut.
