Gotō Chūgai (後藤 宙外, Gotō Chūgai 23 December 1866 – 12 June 1938) was the pen-name of an essayist, novelist and literary critic active from late Meiji through early Showa period Japan. His real name was Gotō Toranosuke. Born in the rural Senboku District of Akita prefecture, Gotō graduated from the Tokyo Semmon Gakko . From 1900, he served as editor of the literary magazine Shishosetsu .
