Pada akhir tahun 1994 ia ikut mendirikan Aliansi Jurnalis Independen (AJI). Ia pernah dipenjara setelah berpartisipasi dalam sebuah demonstrasi yang mengkritik terpilihnya kembali Presiden Soeharto pada tahun 1998. Setelah jatuhnya Soeharto, Ging bekerja di KBR, sebuah kantor berita independen yang dibentuk setelah masa transisi ke reformasi, dan kemudian bekerja di Deutsche Welle, dan akhirnya di BBC, di mana ia bekerja di sana sampai ia meninggal dunia pada Januari 2019.
