Joseph-Georges-Gilles-Claude Lamontagne, PC, OC, CQ, CD (born April 17 1919) is a former Canadian politician and lieutenant-governor of Quebec. Born in Montreal. During World War II, Lamontagne fought as a bomber pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force. During the war he was shot down over the Netherlands and detained as a prisoner of war until 1945.

During World War II, Lamontagne fought as a bomber pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force. During the war he was shot down over the Netherlands and detained as a prisoner of war until 1945. In 1946, he settled in Quebec City and entered the importing business. There, he met and married Mary Schaefer in 1949 and had four children, Michel, André, Pierre and Marie, and now, 5 grandchildren. He entered politics and was elected mayor of Quebec City in 1965. He held that post until he won a seat in the Canadian House of Commons as a Liberal Party candidate in a 1977 by-election. In 1978, he entered the Cabinet of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau as Postmaster General. He served in that position until the defeat of the government in the 1979 election. When the Liberals returned to power in the 1980 election, Lamontagne returned to Cabinet as Minister of National Defence. In 1984, he left politics to accept the position of Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec, and served as the province's viceroy until his retirement in 1990. In 1990, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 2000, he was made a Knight of the National Order of Quebec and in 2005, a member of l'Ordre des Grands Québécois. Diplômé du prestigieux Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf, il a piloté un avion de la RCAF pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Son avion fut abattu au dessus de la Hollande. Il fut prisonnier de guerre jusqu'en 1945. Il s'est installé à Québec en 1946. Il est entré en politique et fut maire de la Ville de Québec pendant 12 ans, de 1965 à 1977. Il est élu à la Chambre des communes en 1977 lors d'une élection partielle. Il a été ministre des Postes puis ministre de la Défense nationale sous Pierre Elliott Trudeau. Il a quitté la politique en 1984 pour devenir lieutenant-gouveneur du Québec, poste qu'il occupa jusqu'en 1990. Il a été nommé Officier de l'Ordre du Canada en 1990 et Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Québec en 2000. (fr)
