Gilf Kebir (جلف كبير) (var. Gilf al-Kebir, Jilf al Kabir) is a plateau in the remote southwest corner of Egypt. Its name translates as "the Great Barrier". This 7770-square-kilometre limestone and sandstone plateau roughly the size of Switzerland rises 300m from the desert floor. It is known for its rugged beauty, remoteness, geological interest, and the dramatic cliff paintings and rock carvings which depict an era of abundant animal life and human habitation.

Au bout de pistes de sable, on y trouve les dernières traces de civilisation, traces de garnison romaine et aérodrome anglais abandonné, montrant l'obstination des hommes, pasteurs Toubous, caravaniers, armées de l'antiquité et de la période moderne, à pénétrer ces lieux.Le Gilf el-Kebir contient le cratère Kebira, un cratère d'impact de REDIRECT Modèle:Nombre avec unité, datant de cinquante millions d'années.La dernière période tempérée dans cette région a probablement pris fin aux environs de -5000; l’Égypte connaissait alors un paysage de savane, où s’ébattaient, à en croire les peintures rupestres, des girafes et autres gibiers. Sur ce plateau vivait une civilisation rupestre, contemporaine du Badarien; sa trace a été retrouvée par la découverte en 1933, par l'explorateur László Almásy, de la grotte des nageurs.Le Gilf el-Kebir est mentionné dans le roman de Michael Ondaatje, Le Patient anglais. Un monument a été érigé en l’honneur du prince Kamel El Din, qui a découvert le Gilf El Kebir, par son ami Almashi (scène du film « Le Patient Anglais »). (fr)

  • Gilf Kebir, o Jilf al Kabir, è un altopiano che si trova nella parte sud-occidentale del deserto libico nella zona a confine fra Egitto-Libia-Sudan, la gran parte dell'altopiano si trova in terrirorio egiziano, e solo la parte più nord-occidentale e' in territorio libico e sudanese. Questo altopiano di calcare e roccia arenaria di circa 7. 700 chilometri, ha un'altezza di 300 metri sopra il livello del deserto. Nel Gilf Kebir si trova anche il cratere Kebira, alto 950 metri e formatosi oltre 50 milioni di anni fa in seguito alla caduta di un meteorite. L'intero cratere meteorico è largo 4. 500 chilometri quadrati, 75 volte più grande del secondo cratere più grande del mondo. Il monte Uweinat si trova nell'estremo sud dell'altopiano, ed è diviso tra Egitto, Libia e Sudan, il punto piu' alto e' comunque al confine fra Libia e Sudan.
