Ghazipur is a city and a municipal board in Ghazipur district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is the administrative headquarters of Ghazipur District. It was founded by Sayyeid Masood "Ghazi", during the Tughlaq dynasty. Its ancient name was Gadhipur which was changed to Ghazipur about 1330, reputedly in honour of Ghazi Malik, a Muslim ruler.

The town is very close to the UP-Bihar border. The local language at the place is Bhojpuri. Ghazipur borders the important religious city of Varanasi and is situated about 70 km East of Varanasi.
