- Georges Van Vrekhem (* 28. März 1935 in Wakken; † 31. August 2012 in Auroville) war ein flämischer Journalist, Poet sowie Dramatiker und war künstlerischer Intendant des professionellen Theaters „Nederlands Toneel te Gent“. Im Jahre 1964 kam Van Vrekhem mit den Lehren von Sri Aurobindo und der Mutter in Berührung. 1970 trat er dem Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry bei und zog elf Jahre später nach Auroville. Georges Van Vrekhem übersetzte ausgewählte Schriften des Ramayana, des Mahabharata und Bücher von Sri Aurobindo, der Mutter, sowie Satprem ins Niederländische. Georges Van Vrekhem verstarb am 31. August 2012 in seinem Haus in Auroville; er hatte seit über 20 Jahren an einer Herzschwäche gelitten. (de)

He became acquainted with the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother in 1964. In 1970, he joined the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Puducherry, and eight years later, in 1978 he moved to Auroville. He has translated as selected writings from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata and several books of Sri Aurobindo, The Mother, Peter Heehs, and Satprem into Dutch. Van Vrekhem died during sleep in his Auroville home in Shakti on 31 August 2012. (en)

Na de lagere school in zijn geboortedorp Wakken , trok hij naar de Normaalschool in Torhout om voor onderwijzer te studeren. In het schooljaar 1950-1951 schakelde hij over naar de afdeling Grieks-Latijn in het St.-Rembertscollege in dezelfde stad. Daar hij de zesde klas niet had gevolgd, moest hij in 1955 voor de centrale examencommissie proberen zijn diploma hoger middelbaar te behalen, wat niet lukte. Hij vond werk in Gent en werd er een succesvol auteur. Als theaterauteur van een negental stukken werd hij in 1965 geëerd met de literatuurprijs van de Stad Gent en in 1968 gelauwerd met de ANV-Visser Neerlandia-prijs voor zijn stuk Dood van 2 dames. Hij was ook enige jaren artistiek adviseur van het NTGent. Hij specialiseerde zich nadien in het leven en de filosofie van Sri Aurobindo en . Hij overleed in 2012 aan een hartaanval in Auroville, de experimentele stad van Mira Alfassa in het Indiase Viluppuram waar hij in 1970 naar toe was gegaan. (nl)
