| - Francis George Steiner (born April 23, 1929), is an influential European-born American literary critic, essayist, philosopher, novelist, translator, and educator. He has written extensively about the relationship between language, literature and society, and the impact of The Holocaust. A polyglot and polymath, he is often credited with redefining the role of the critic. Steiner is ranked "among the great minds in today's literary world." English novelist A. S. Byatt described him as a "late, late, late Renaissance man ... a European metaphysician with an instinct for the driving ideas of our time." Harriet Harvey-Wood, a former literature director of the British Council, saw him as a "magnificent lecturer – prophetic and doom-laden [who would] turn up with half a page of scribbled notes, and never refer to them."Steiner was Professor Emeritus of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Geneva, Professor of Comparative Literature and Fellow at the University of Oxford and Professor of Poetry at Harvard University .He lives in Cambridge, England, where he has been Extraordinary Fellow at Churchill College at the University of Cambridge since 1969. De ouders van George Steiner waren Oostenrijkse joden, die zich in 1924 vestigden in Parijs, waar Steiner in 1929 werd geboren. In 1940 vluchtte de familie voor het opkomend nationaal-socialisme naar New York. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog ging Steiner doceren aan de universiteit van Cambridge. Steiner kan dus met recht gelden als een Europeaan, die zich niet bij een nationaliteit laat indelen. Het thema van Steiners werk is ook Europa. Hierin neemt de jodenvervolging een belangrijke plaats in: Europa pleegde zelfmoord door de Joden te doden, zei Steiner in 1969. Niettemin benadrukt hij ook de charmes van Europa, zoals de koffiehuizen en de klassieke muziek. In Nederland kreeg Steiner bekendheid door zijn deelname aan het interviewprogramma Nauwgezet en Wanhopig en het discussieprogramma Van de Schoonheid en de Troost van Wim Kayzer . In 1987 had hij in Leiden al de Huizingalezing gehouden. In 2000, 2002 en 2004 was hij aanwezig op de conferenties van de Tilburgse stichting Nexus.
