George Elliott Clarke (born February 12 1960) is a Canadian poet and playwright. His work largely explores and chronicles the experience and history of the Black Canadian community of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, creating a cultural geography that Clarke refers to as Africadia.

  • George Elliott Clarke (born February 12 1960) is a Canadian poet and playwright. His work largely explores and chronicles the experience and history of the Black Canadian community of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, creating a cultural geography that Clarke refers to as Africadia. Born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, Clarke has spent much of his career writing about the black communities of Nova Scotia. He also served for a time in the African-American Studies department at Duke University. He earned a B.A. honours degree in English from the University of Waterloo, an M.A. degree in English from Dalhousie University and a Ph.D. degree in English from Queen’s University . In addition, he has received honorary degrees from Dalhousie University, the University of New Brunswick, the University of Alberta, and the University of Waterloo . He is currently an English professor at the University of Toronto. He was a featured writer/instructor at the 2007 Maritime Writers' Workshop & Literary Festival in Fredericton, New Brunswick. (en)

Diese nannte Clarke in einer Mischung aus "african" und dem älteren französisch-mi'kmaq Wort für die Gegend, "Acadie", "Africadians." Clarkes poetische Werke zeichnen sich durch Überschreitungen von Genregrenzen und durch eine Mischung klassischer Formen mit mündlicher Tradition, Jazz- und Bluesrhythmen aus; sein bekanntestes Werk bisher ist Whylah Falls . 2001 erhielt Clarke den renommierten Governor General's Award.
