Geoffrey Bayldon (born 7 January 1924) is a British actor. After playing roles in dramas of Shakespeare, he became famous with the role of Catweazle in the early 1970s, after turning down the opportunity to play both the First and Second Doctors in Doctor Who.

Bayldon's other long-running parts include the Crowman in Worzel Gummidge and Magic Grandad in the BBC television series Watch. Bayldon made several film appearances in the 1960s and 1970s, including King Rat, To Sir With Love Casino Royale, the Envy segment of The Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins and the film version of the television series Porridge . Among his more recent television appearances was the Five game show Fort Boyard.He also had a guest appearance in the long-running BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who as Organon in The Creature from the Pit. More recently, he has also performed in two audio plays based on the Doctor Who television series by Big Finish Productions in the Doctor Who Unbound series: Auld Mortality and A Storm of Angels. Other television roles include parts in the dramatisation of Blott on the Landscape, and in an episode of The Avengers and of Star Cops. He was in the Tales of the Unexpected episode "Down Among the Sheltering Palms." He has also appeared in a number of BBC Schools programmes, where he has displayed a number of otherwise unexploited talents . In 2007 he made a guest appearance in New Tricks as Leonard Casey. His long term partner was the actor Alan Rowe who sadly pre-deceased Geoffrey. (en)

Bayldon kreeg zijn opleiding aan de Old Vic Theatre School tussen 1947 en 1949. Zijn toneeldebuut maakte hij in 1949, in het stuk Tough at the Top, dat het laatste werk van C.B. Cochran bleek te zijn. Daarna speelde hij achtereenvolgens voor het Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, Glasgow Citzen's en het Birmingham Repertory Theatre. In 1952 maakte hij zijn West End-debuut in het stuk The Happy Time en verscheen in latere jaren aldaar in Worzel Gummidge, A Month of Sundays, Maria en Unfinishned Business. Buiten Engeland was hij onder meer te zien in Caesar and Cleopatra, tijdens het Ravinia Shakespeare Festival in Chicago en in My Fair Lady . Der Sohn eines Schneiders erhielt seine Ausbildung in den Jahren 1947-1949 bei Laurence Olivier an der Old Vic Theatre School in Bristol. Von Olivier mit dem „Shakespeare-Virus“ angesteckt, brillierte Bayldon ebenfalls vor allem in Shakespeares Stücken, etwa im Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, im Citizen's Theatre in Glasgow und im Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Neben seiner Theatertätigkeit spielte er in unzähligen Fernsehserien, wie in Mit Schirm, Charme und Melone, Simon Templar oder Geheimauftrag für John Drake und einigen Kinoproduktionen mit. So spielte er z.B. in der James Bond-Parodie Casino Royale die Rolle des Waffenmeisters Q. Als die BBC 1963 eine Science-Fiction-Serie mit dem Titel Doctor Who plante, sollte Bayldon der erste Hauptdarsteller der Serie werden. Er lehnte die Rolle jedoch ab und die Hauptrolle wurde an William Hartnell vergeben . International bekannt wurde Bayldon durch die Hauptrolle in der 26-teiligen Jugendserie Catweazle, die von 1970 bis 1974 von der englischen London Weekend Television (LWT) produziert wurde. Dabei war er durch extrem dickes Makeup kaum erkennbar. Ursprünglich war für die Hauptrolle der Schauspieler Jon Pertwee vorgesehen, der sie jedoch zugunsten der Hauptrolle in der Serie Doctor Who ablehnte und dann die dritte Inkarnation des Doctors spielte. In einer Nebenrolle trat Bayldon dann aber dennoch auch einmal in dieser Serie auf, als Organon in der Folge The Creature from the Pit und war als Sprecher in zwei Hörspielen um Doctor Who zu hören: Auld Mortality und A Storm of Angels.
