| - Geoffrey Charles Smith (born 1953) is a British mathematician and Senior Lecturer of Mathematics at the University of Bath. He is noted for his contributions to group theory. He was edudated at Trinity School in Croydon, Keble College Oxford, the University of Warwick and received his Ph.D. from the University of Manchester in 1983. His thesis, Zeta functions of torsion-free finitely generated nilpotent groups, was written under the direction of Dan Segal. He has been the leader of the United Kingdom International Mathematical Olympiad team since 2002, a position which he has held for a longer continuous period than any other person. His time as leader has seen a considerable increase in training for the team: he has overseen annual training camps in Bath, Oundle, Hungary, and immediate pre-IMO training camps, in addition to the longer-established annual camp at Trinity College, Cambridge. In his first seven years as leader, the UK team received 4 gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze medals, maintaining the level of achievement of the seven years prior to this. He has expanded the range of mathematics competitions in which the UK competes. The UK are the reigning Romanian Masters in Mathematics champions, and participate annually as a guest nation in the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad. As well as being a group theorist, he is well known for his interest in Euclidean geometry. He often collaborates with Christopher Bradley and/or David Monk and has published several papers on Forum Geometricorum. (en)
