- Die Direção-Geral de Segurança (DGS) (deutsch Generaldirektorat für Sicherheit) war von 1969 bis 1975 die Geheimpolizei der Estado Novo-Diktatur in Portugal. Die DGS wurde am 24. November 1969 gegründet. Sie ging aus der am 24. September 1969 aufgelösten, berüchtigten Polícia Internacional e de Defesa do Estado (PIDE) hervor. Als es am 25. April 1974 in Portugal zur Nelkenrevolution kam, wollte der Kommandant der DGS bewaffneten Widerstand leisten. Mitglieder der DGS schossen aus dem Fenster ihres Hauptsitzes in die Menschenmenge. Vier Menschen starben, 45 wurden verletzt. Ein Agent der DGS wurde auf der Flucht getötet. Es waren die einzigen Opfer der ansonsten friedlichen Revolution. An der Fassade des ehemaligen Sitzes der DGS am Convento do Carmo befindet sich heute eine Gedenktafel für die hier Erschossenen. Viele Mitglieder der DGS flohen nach Spanien. Andere, wie der Generaldirektor Silva Pais, wurden verhaftet. 89 Agenten gelang es in einer Massenflucht im Juni 1975 aus dem Gefängnis zu entkommen. Zwar wurde die DGS offiziell 1974 aufgelöst, in den portugiesischen Kolonien war die DGS aber noch bis 1975 als Polícia de Informações Militares aktiv. (de)
- The General Directorate of Security (Portuguese: Direção-Geral de Segurança; DGS) was a Portuguese criminal police body active between 1969 and 1974, during the last years of the Estado Novo dictatorship. Although their duties included, in addition to state security, the supervision of foreigners, border control, and the fight against illegal trafficking of migrants, historically the DGS was essentially a secret police responsible for repression, without judicial control, of all forms of political opposition to the Estado Novo. The DGS was created in 1969 to succeed to the International and State Defense Police (PIDE), by Decree-Law no. 49 401, of November 24, 1969, of the government of Marcello Caetano. It was disbanded in the continent and islands in 1974, following the Revolution of April 25 that ended the Estado Novo, by Decree-Law no. 171/74 of April 25. In overseas territories it continued to exist until 1975, under the designation of "Military Intelligence Police". (en)

Apesar das suas funções incluírem, para além da segurança do Estado, a fiscalização dos estrangeiros, o controlo das fronteiras e o combate ao tráfego ilegal de emigrantes, historicamente, a DGS foi, essencialmente, uma polícia política responsável pela repressão brutal, e sem controlo judicial, de todas as formas de oposição política ao Estado Novo. A DGS foi criada em 1969, para suceder à Polícia Internacional e de Defesa do Estado (PIDE), pelo Decreto-Lei n.º 49 401, de 24 de Novembro de 1969, do governo de Marcello Caetano. Foi extinta no continente e ilhas em 1974, na sequência da Revolução de 25 de Abril, pelo Decreto-Lei n.º 171/74, de 25 de Abril.
