Mai 1955 in Staten Island, USA) ist ein US-amerikanischer Arzt, Professor für Anästhesie und Notfallmediziner des Hochschulkrankenhauses in Lüttich, Belgien sowie ehemaliger Chefmediziner der FIA Formel-1-Weltmeisterschaft. Nach Beendigung des Studiums an der Universität Rochester ging Hartstein in den 1970er Jahren nach Belgien, da es in den USA an Trainingspositionen mangelte. 1983 kehrte Hartstein nach New York in die Bronx zurück und spezialisierte sich am Einstein College der Medizin auf die Anästhesie. Im Jahr 1989 wechselte Hartstein erneut nach Belgien, wo er in Spa-Francorchamps (u. a. beim Großen Preis von Belgien in der Formel 1) die Aufgaben eines Lokalmediziners bei Rennen übernahm. Im Jahr 1990 wurde Gary Hartstein dem Medical Car der Formel 1 von Professor Sid Watkins zugewiesen. Watkins und Hartstein verband eine feste Freundschaft. Im Januar 2004 erklärte Watkins, dass er sich aus der Formel 1 zurückziehen wolle. Hartstein wurde sein Nachfolger als Chefarzt der Formel 1. Am 14. November 2012 wurde bekannt, dass die FIA Hartsteins Vertrag nicht für die Formel-1-Saison 2013 verlängern würde. Gary Hartstein lebt im belgischen Lüttich. (de)
- Dr Gary Hartstein, M.D. (born 17 May 1955 in Staten Island, United States), is Clinical Professor of Anesthesia and Emergency Medicine at University of Liège Hospital, Liège, Belgium and former FIA Medical Delegate for the Formula One World Championship. After finishing his undergraduate study at the University of Rochester, Hartstein trained as a physician in Belgium during the 1970s. In 1983 he returned to his native New York, spending six years at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in the Bronx, specialising in anaesthesiology. In 1989 Hartstein returned to Belgium and began working at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps as part of the local medical team attending races. In 1990 Hartstein was assigned to the medical car containing Professor Sid Watkins and the two physicians immediately formed a firm friendship. Hartstein's work at the Belgian Grand Prix continued until 1997 when the FIA, realising the need for an anaesthetist to assist Watkins, recruited him. For the next seven years Hartstein and Watkins rode together in the medical car at the start of most races. In January 2005 Sid Watkins announced that he was to retire as Formula One Medical Delegate and Hartstein was selected as his successor. Since that time, Hartstein has been key in developing some of the FIA's new approaches and policies in terms of medical safety. Hartstein was the chair of the FIA Institute's Medical Training Working Group, which aims to standardize training and practices of motorsport doctors, based on the most up-to-date trauma training techniques.He was also, with Prof Gerard Saillant, behind the creation of the "FIA Institute Faculty" (FIMF), which will seek to consolidate the expertise of motor sport doctors and medical staff around the world, on the model of professional associations. In December 2012 Hartstein did not have his contract renewed as Formula One Medical Delegate. His successor was Chief Medical Officer of the British Grand Prix, Doctor . In April 2015 Hartstein moved to Abu Dhabi to work as a consultant anesthesiologist. (en)

Dopo essersi laureato in medicina all'Università di Rochester, Hartstein emigrò in Belgio dove iniziò a praticare la professione medica negli anni '70. Nel 1983 ritornò a New York, dove si specializzò in anestesia presso l', nel Bronx. Nel 1989 Hartstein divenne medico ufficiale del Circuito di Spa-Francorchamps, prestando servizio durante le corse automobilistiche. Durante il Gran Premio del Belgio 1990 ebbe modo per la prima volta di accompagnare come aiutante il dottor Sid Watkins, delegato medico della Formula 1, con cui strinse subito amicizia. Nel 1997 la Federazione Internazionale dell'Automobile, su precisa richiesta del dottor Watkins, che aveva bisogno di un anestesista durante i gran premi, lo assunse a tempo pieno. Per i successivi otto anni Hartstein accompagnò Watkins a bordo della Medical Car nel corso delle gare del mondiale di Formula 1. Nel gennaio 2005 Watkins si dimise, e fu proprio Hartstein a succedergli come delegato medico della FIA per la Formula 1; nel 2008 l'incarico di delegato medico passò a , ma Hartstein continuò il proprio lavoro in pista come coordinatore medico dei soccorsi (FIA F1 Medical Rescue Coordinator). Dopo il campionato mondiale di Formula 1 2012 il contratto di Hartstein non venne rinnovato dalla FIA, e il suo incarico di coordinatore medico passò al dottor . Gary Hartstein è presidente del FIA Institute's Medical Training Working Group, che si occupa del miglioramento delle prestazioni mediche durante le corse automobilistiche.
