- A referendum on becoming a republic was held in the Gambia in April 1970. The changes resulted in the creation of the post of President to replace Elizabeth II as head of state, thus eliminating the post of Governor-General. It was the second referendum on the issue: the first in 1965 failed because the two-thirds majority required was not reached. This time the referendum produced a "yes" result. The Prime Minister Sir Dawda Jawara was elected the first President by the parliament, replacing Elizabeth II (represented by Governor-General Sir Farimang Mamadi Singateh) as head of state on 24 April 1970. - Der Volksentscheid in Gambia 1970 (englisch 1970 Plebiscite) fand am 24. April 1970 statt. Einer Schätzung zufolge hatte Gambia 1970 eine Bevölkerung von 484.580 Einwohnern. Kurz nach der Unabhängigkeit Gambias beabsichtigte 1965 die junge Regierung, sich ganz von Großbritannien zu lösen und Gambia in eine Präsidialrepublik umzuwandeln, die anstelle der britischen Königin einen gewählten Präsidenten als Staatsoberhaupt haben sollte. Für diese Verfassungsänderung war ein Volksentscheid notwendig, den die Regierung bei einem ersten Volksentscheid 1965 durchführen ließ. Dieser scheiterte aber knapp, so dass 1970 die Frage wiederholt wurde. Von den geschätzten 135.000 zuvor registrierten Wählern wurden 120.606 gültige Stimmen abgegeben, damit lag die Wahlbeteiligung bei 89,34 Prozent. 70,45 Prozent der Wähler hatten sich für die neue Verfassung ausgesprochen, womit diesmal eine Zweidrittelmehrheit erreicht wurde und die Verfassung geändert werden konnte. - Un referéndum constitucional se llevó a cabo en Gambia en abril de 1970 con el objetivo de convertir al país en una República. El anterior referéndum, celebrado poco después de la independencia en 1965, había triunfado, pero como no alcanzó los dos tercios necesarios de votos para que el "Sí" fuera aprobado, se tuvo que esperar cinco años para realizar otro. El resultado fue una victoria del sí con el 70.45% de los votos. Los cambios dieron lugar a la creación del cargo de Presidente de Gambia para reemplazar al Gobernador General (entonces ) y a la Reina Isabel II del Reino Unido como jefe de estado. El 24 de abril de 1970, Dawda Jawara, hasta entonces Primer Ministro, fue juramentado como primer Presidente de Gambia. (es)
