- Fool's Mate (French: Le Coup du berger) is a 1956 short film directed by Jacques Rivette. It stars Virginie Vitry as a wife cheating on her husband (Jacques Doniol-Valcroze). When her lover (Jean-Claude Brialy) buys her a mink coat, the adulterous pair hatch a plan to avoid her husband's questioning the coat's origins. Fool's Mate is considered by some to be the first film of the French New Wave, or the movement's earliest antecedent. Released in 1956, the film is something of a curio thanks to a scene in which Rivette and New Wave contemporaries Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard, and François Truffaut are seen in the same room as party guests. Prodotto da Pierre Braunberger, e Claude Chabrol, grazie ad un'eredità della moglie di quest'ultimo, è un cortometraggio in 35 millimetri e primo film professionale della Nouvelle Vague. Girato nell'appartamento di Chabrol, racconta la storia di una furberia mal riuscita. Il titolo del film, fa riferimento ad una mossa degli scacchi chiamata in francese coup du berger (lett. "colpo del pastore"), corrispondente all'italiano matto del barbiere. La trama è sostanzialmente identica a quella di un episodio del film Accadde al commissariato del 1954 di Giorgio Simonelli con Nino Taranto, film che sembra non essere stato distribuito in Francia, anche se Chabrol affermò che la storia era conosciuta da tempo.
