- Flexblue was a concept of a small nuclear power plant (50 to 250 MWe), measuring a hundred meters long and about 14 meters in diameter. It was studied by Naval Group (French industrial group specialised in naval defence and marine renewable energy) from 2008 to around 2016, in partnership with AREVA, the CEA and EDF. The production unit, as it was presented by its promoters, could be used by developing countries and in areas of developed countries that need to compensate for an energy deficit. Another target market for the reactor was medium-sized countries, like Monaco, which may be unsuitable for large nuclear plants. Proponents of the Flexblue technology point out that this type of reactor would be much less prone to terrorist attacks than terrestrial-based ones. However, nuclear reactor leaks would be much more difficult and costly to resolve underwater. Scholars have pointed out that operating a nuclear reactor underwater would also raise the surrounding water temperature by several degrees and affect the surrounding marine biome. (en)

Ce projet s'inscrivait dans une tendance actuelle du marché des centrales nucléaires : l'étude de projet de constructions de centrales de puissance de l'ordre de 30 à 300 MW contre 1 000 à 1 600 MW pour les centrales classiques, qui peuvent être construite en série en usine et déployée rapidement alors qu'un chantier de centrale classique prend une décennie. - Flexblue – koncepcyjna podwodna elektrownia jądrowa o mocy wyjściowej od 50 do 250 MW. Projekt realizowany jest przez DCNS we współpracy z AREVA oraz CEA i EDF. Reaktor Flexblue będzie miał postać około 100-metrowego cylindra o średnicy od 12 do 15 metrów. Łączna masa reaktora wyniesie około 12 000 ton. Podmorskie kable zasilające będą przenosić energię elektryczną z elektrowni Flexblue do wybrzeża i lokalnej sieci dystrybucyjnej, tak jak każda elektrownia konwencjonalna. Reaktor zacumowany zostanie na stabilnym dnie na głębokości od 60 do 100 metrów, w odległości kilku kilometrów od brzegu.Zbiorniki balastowe zostaną wykorzystane do podnoszenia lub obniżania elektrowni podczas instalacji i konserwacji, dostarczania paliwa lub demontażu. Moduły Flexblue mogą dzięki tym zbiornikom unosić się nad dnem morskim, czyniąc je całkowicie chronionym przed aktywnością sejsmiczną oraz tsunami. (pl)
