- Die Flat Islands (sinngemäß aus dem Englischen übersetzt Flache Inseln) sind eine kleine Inselkette von 4 km Länge vor der Mawson-Küste des ostantarktischen Mac-Robertson-Lands. Sie liegen mit nordost-südwestlicher Ausrichtung 3 km südwestlich von Welch Island im östlichen Teil der Holme Bay und werden durch die Kista Strait von der Festlandküste getrennt. Norwegische Kartografen kartierten sie anhand von Luftaufnahmen, die bei der Lars-Christensen-Expedition 1936/37 entstanden. Sie benannten eine Inselgruppe am südlichen Ende der Kette als Flatøyholmane. Nach Vermessungen im Rahmen der Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions übertrug das Antarctic Names Committee of Australia (ANCA) den Namen auf die gesamte Inselkette und übersetzte ihn dabei ins Englische. - The Flat Islands or Flatøyholmane are a small chain of islands which extends 5 km (2.5 nmi) in a northeast–southwest direction, lying about 3 km (1.9 mi) north-west of Mawson Station and 3.7 km (2 nmi) southwest of Welch Island in the eastern part of Holme Bay. The Flat Islands were mapped by Norwegian cartographers from air photos taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition (1936-1937) and the name Flatøyholmane (the flat island islets) was applied to the group at the south end of the chain. The island mapped as Flatøy on the Norwegian map is actually three islands. Following surveys by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE), the Antarctic Names Committee of Australia (ANCA) recommended in 1958 that the descriptive name Flat Islands be applied for the entire group. The group is made up of Stinear Island and Béchervaise Island, amongst others. (en)
