- En náutica, la Zapata (Contraquilla inferior, Falsa Quilla) es el tablón fuerte que compuesto por varias piezas para suplir la longitud necesaria, se asegura con grapas o cívicas a la quilla por su cara inferior para resguardarla. (fr. Fausse quille; ing. False keel; it. Sapata). En algunas embarcaciones y para mayor resguardo se suelen poner dos tablones de estos, los cuales reciben los nombres de zapata y contrazapata. Typically 6 inches (15 cm) thick for a 74-gun ship in the 19th century, the false keel was constructed in several pieces, which were scarfed together, and attached to the underside of the keel by iron staples. The false keel was intended to protect the main keel from damage, and also protect the heads of the bolts holding the main keel together.
