Evert Jan Boks (18 April 1838 – 14 June 1914) was a Dutch painter.Evert-Jan Boks was a pupil of Arie Lieman and Willem Riem Vis in Apeldoorn. He continued his studies at the Royal Academy in Antwerp, where he won a first prize in 1863. Later on, he also won the Prix de Rome. After study tours, mainly in France and Italy, he permanently settled in Antwerp, and married Elie Voet. Their house which they inhabited life-long in Antwerp, still exists in the rue Lamorinière.Many of his works went to the United States at a time when the first Americantourists began to visit Europe in large numbers in tours organised by the steamship companies. He took an active part in artistic and social life in Antwerp. Boks frequently exhibited in Belgium and at the Paris Salons. He was awarded the Order of Leo

Sein Vater, Derk Boks (1791–1862), besaß eine Papierfabrik und hatte sieben Kinder. Evert Jan besuchte eine Schule in Apeldoorn und arbeitete dann in einem Finanzamt. Er studierte an der Hooge Burgerschool in Het Loo, war kurze Zeit Schüler von Nicolaas Pieneman in Amsterdam und schrieb sich 1858 an der Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen ein, wo er Schüler von Nicaise de Keyser wurde. 1863 wurde er mit dem Großen Preis ausgezeichnet, erhielt auch den Rompreis, was ihm einen Aufenthalt in Italien ermöglichte. Nach dem Studium wurde er in Antwerpen als Porträt- und Genremaler tätig. Seine Genrebilder zeigten meist komische oder sentimentale Szenen aus dem Leben der Bourgeoisie. Er arbeitete eng mit zwei Antwerpener Kunsthändlern zusammen, die seine Werke erwarben: mit Albert D’Huyvetter senior sowie mit seinem Sohn Albert junior, und auch mit dem Kunsthändler Delahaye.
