Emmerich (Emo) Welzl (born 4 August 1958 in Linz, Austria) is a computer scientist known for his research in computational geometry. He is a professor in the Institute for Theoretical Computer Science at ETH Zurich in Switzerland.

Welzl studierte ab 1977 an der Universität Graz mit dem Diplom in angewandter Mathematik 1981 und der Promotion bei Hermann Maurer 1983 mit einer Dissertation über formale Sprachen. 1983 habilitierte er sich in Graz in Informatik. Als Post-Doktorand war er 1984 an der Universität Leiden und 1985 war er Gastprofessor an der University of Colorado in Denver. Von 1987 bis 1996 war er Professor für Mathematik (Berechenbarkeitstheorie) an der FU Berlin und leitete von 1991 bis 1996 das Graduiertenprogramm algorithmische diskrete Mathematik der Berliner Universitäten. 1996 wurde er Professor an der ETH Zürich, an der er von 2016 bis 2018 Leiter der Abteilung Informatik war. Von 2000 bis 2005 war er in Zürich Leiter des Berlin-Züricher Graduiertenprogramms Combinatorics, Geometry and Computaton (CGC). 1994 war er Gastwissenschaftler am International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) in Berkeley. Er befasst sich mit rechnergestützter Geometrie und deren Anwendungen, kombinatorischen Optimierungsmodellen, Zufallsmethoden, diskreter Geometrie und Erfüllbarkeitsproblemen. 1992 erhielt er einen Max-Planck-Forschungspreis mit Micha Sharir. 1995 erhielt er den Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz-Preis. 1998 wurde er Fellow der Association for Computing Machinery. 2005 wurde er Mitglied der Leopoldina, 2006 der Academia Europaea, 2007 der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und 2014 korrespondierendes Mitglied der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. 1998 war er Vortragender auf dem ICM in Berlin (Halting Point Sets mit Artur Andrzejak).
