- Ebió (Ebion, Ἐβίων) fou el fundador suposat de la secta cristiana dels ebionites, en la qual s'accepta la religió de Crist però mantenint l'observança de la llei de Moisès. Especialment insistien en la necessitat de la circumcisió i denunciaven Sant Pau com a herètic. Orígens divideix els ebonites en dues branques, els que negaven la concepció miraculosa de Jesús i els que l'acceptaven. La secta va florir vers el 400. L'existència del mateix Ebió és dubtosa. Tertul·lià l'esmenta i el segueixen Agustí d'Hipona, Jeroni d'Estridó, Epifani I de Constantinoble i Teodoret. Aquest darrer després de dir ταύτης τῆς φάλαγγος ἦρξεν Ἐβίων, afegeix, τὸν πτωχὸν δὲ οὔτως οἱ Ἑβραῖοι προσαγορεύονσιν. Orígenes diu que el nom de la secta derivava de la paraula hebrea "ebion" (pobre) i desconeix un personatge de nom Ebió. El talmud hebreu l'esmenta com a fundador d'una secta, però realment no se sap si va existir. (ca)

The existent historical evidence indicates that the name "Ebionite" is derived from a Hebrew word, "ebion" (אביון) meaning "poor" and thus not from someone's name. Ebion is generally seen today as a purely literary figure, whose reputed existence in antiquity was used to explain where the Ebionites got their inspiration. However, once he had been accepted as real, a small tradition developed around him that lasted in early learned Christian circles for a few centuries. (en)

Jest bardzo wątpliwe, by postać ta rzeczywiście istniała, choć jako założyciela ebionitów wymienia go kilku ojców Kościoła – imię "Ebion" stanowi prawdopodobnie błędne wyjaśnienie pochodzenia nazwy "ebionici". Nazwa ta pojawia się po raz pierwszy u Ireneusza z Lyonu [Adv. Haer., I, XXVI, 2], jednak bez wyjaśnienia znaczenia. Jako pierwszy wzmiankował o Ebionie Tertulian [De Praescr., XXXIII; De Carne Chr., XIV, 18). Po Tertulianie nazwę ebionitów wyprowadzali od Ebiona m.in. św. Hipolit Rzymski [zob. Pseudo-Tert., Adv. Haer., III – jest to relacja z zaginionego pisma Hipolita Syntagma], św. Hieronim [Comm. in Gal., III, 14], Epifaniusz [Haeres., XXX]. Epifaniusz podaje nawet pewne szczegóły z życia Ebiona – miał on narodzić się w osadzie Cochabe w Baszan, podróżować po Azji i odwiedzić Rzym. Św. Hieronim podaje z kolei fragmenty, których autorem miał być rzekomo Ebion. Już od XIX w. większość historyków odrzuca istnienie Ebiona. Nazwę ebionitów za Orygenesem [Contr. Cels. II, 1] powszechnie wywodzi się z hebrajskiego słowa ebjonim, "ubodzy". (pl)
