It currently ranks within the top of the most watched shows in the United Kingdom. EastEnders storylines examine the domestic and professional lives of the people who live and work in Albert Square, a Victorian square of terraced houses, a pub, a street market and various small businesses in the East End of London, United Kingdom. The series was originally screened as two half-hour episodes per week. Today four episodes are broadcast each week on BBC One (each episode is repeated on BBC Three at 10pm) and an omnibus edition screens on Sunday afternoons. It is one of the UK's highest-rated programmes, often appearing near or at the top of the week's BARB ratings. Within eight months of its launch, it reached the number one spot in the ratings, and has almost consistently remained among the top-rated programmes in Britain ever since. The average audience share for an episode is currently between 35 and 45%. Created by producer Julia Smith and script editor Tony Holland, EastEnders has remained significant in terms of the BBC's success and audience share, and also the history of British television drama, tackling many controversial and taboo issues previously unseen on mainstream television in the UK. EastEnders has won five BAFTA Awards, and has won the Inside Soap Award for 'Best Soap' for ten years running, as well as ten National Television Awards for 'Most Popular Serial Drama' and six awards for 'Best Soap' at the British Soap Awards. It has also been inducted into the Rose d'Or Hall of Fame. EastEnders loopt vanaf 1985 tot heden. De verhaallijnen waren vooral in de beginjaren zeer realistisch en volks. Tegenwoordig lijkt EastEnders eerder sensationeel dan realistisch. EastEnders liet 'Dirty Den'(Leslie Grantham) uit de dood herrijzen, om vervolgens een flink aantal maanden later vermoord worden. Ditmaal is 'Dirty Den' echt dood. De Queen Victoria Pub oftewel de Queen Vic is het centrum van alle perikelen van de hoofdpersonen, meer dan eens komen ze een drankje nuttigen in Walfords enige kroeg, al dan niet gepaard gaand met de nodige roddels, ruzies of feestjes. Niet voor niets zei Leslie Grantham "Blijkbaar rust er een vloek op de Vic; er breekt altijd de pleuris uit". Er zijn veel buitenopnames, omdat ook een aantal personages uit deze serie marktkooplui zijn. Jego produkcją zajmuje się Julia Smith, autorem scenariuszy jest Tony Holland. Na kanale BBC One można obejrzeć co tydzień cztery odcinki tego serialu. EastEnders należy do jednej z najczęściej oglądanych oper mydlanych w Anglii. Zdobył m.in. pięć nagród przyznawanych przez BAFTA. Serial był w Polsce emitowany w 16 województwach przez telewizję TVP 3 Regionalna. Odcinki pochodziły z sezonu 10., czyli z 1995 roku. Zakupiono 130 epizodów, które emitowano dwa razy dziennie od poniedziałku do piątku. Jednak nie wyemitowano wszystkich zakupionych odcinków. Powodem była prawdopodobnie niska oglądalność. Niektóre sceny serialu zostały użyte to kilkuminutowego programu o operach mydlanych, telenowelach oraz serialach obyczajowych. Program był kilkakrotnie emitowany w ciągu dnia, również przez TVP 3 Regionalną. Wówczas lektor opowiadał, że innym rodzajem telenoweli jest brytyjska opera mydlana, której nakręcono wówczas grubo ponad 2000 odcinków. Dla przypomnienia dodać można, że Moda na sukces nie miała nawet 1000 odcinków, wyemitowanych w naszym kraju. Prawdopodobnie zbyt duża ilość odcinków i typowe brytyjskie "przynudzanie" spowodowało, że serial został zdjęty z anteny. Tak zwani EastEndersi są jednak oglądane przez polską widownię poprzez Internet oraz kanały odbierane przez różnego rodzaju platformy cyfrowe i dekodery satelitarne. (pl)
