De Amerikaanse band werd in 1969 in Chicago opgericht door Maurice White, die reeds zijn sporen had verdiend als sessiedrummer voor het Chess-label. Aanvankelijk heette de groep nog Salty Peppers. White vond die naam echter niet universeel genoeg voor de plannen die hij met de band had. Hij herdoopte hem in 'Earth, Wind & Fire', naar de elementen aarde, lucht en vuur in zijn astrologische kaart. Lucht vond hij niet goed klinken, dus dat werd 'Wind'. Live wordt de groep ook wel aangeduid als 'The Mighty Elements of the Universe'. Na de eerste 2 albums werd de band feitelijk opgedoekt. Mede-oprichters Wade Flemons en Donald Whitehead waren het niet eens met de muzikale visie die Maurice voor zijn band in gedachte had. Alleen de broers Maurice en Verdine White bleven over. De manager van de band had Maurice verteld dat als de band een jonger en breder publiek wilde aanspreken, hij voor het uitvoeren van die visie beter jonge getalenteerde musici kon recruteren in plaats van verder gaan met 'oude jazzmuzikanten'. De nieuwkomers waren: Philip Bailey, Larry Dunn, Jessica Cleaves, Roland Baustista en Roland Laws. Hun album Open Our Eyes (1974) werd een groot succes. In 1975 was de soundtrack That's the Way of the World een nog groter succes en vestigde de band definitief aan de top waar ze vele jaren zouden verblijven.
