Douglas Noël Adams (11 March 1952 – 11 May 2001) was an English author, comic radio dramatist, and musician. He is best known as the author of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. Hitchhiker's began on radio, and developed into a "trilogy" of five books (which sold more than fifteen million copies during his lifetime) as well as a television series, a comic book series, a computer game, and a feature film that was completed after Adams' death.

Hitchhiker's began on radio, and developed into a "trilogy" of five books (which sold more than fifteen million copies during his lifetime) as well as a television series, a comic book series, a computer game, and a feature film that was completed after Adams' death. The series has also been adapted for live theatre using various scripts; the earliest such productions used material newly written by Adams. He was known to some fans as Bop Ad (after his illegible signature), or by his initials DNA. In addition to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams wrote or co-wrote three stories of the science fiction television series Doctor Who and served as Script Editor during the seventeenth season. His other written works include the Dirk Gently novels, and he co-wrote two Liff books and Last Chance to See, itself based on a radio series. Adams also originated the idea for the computer game Starship Titanic, which was produced by a company that Adams co-founded, and adapted into a novel by Terry Jones. A posthumous collection of essays and other material, including an incomplete novel, was published as The Salmon of Doubt in 2002. His fans and friends also knew Adams as an environmental activist, a self-described 'radical atheist', and a lover of fast cars, cameras, the Macintosh computer, and other 'techno gizmos'. The biologist Richard Dawkins dedicated his book The God Delusion to Douglas Adams and in it described how Adams came to understand evolution, consequently becoming an atheist. Douglas was a keen technologist, writing about such topics as e-mail and Usenet before they became widely known. Tam też 8 marca 1978 o godzinie 22.30 rozpoczęto nadawanie jego najbardziej znanego dzieła - serialu radiowego "Autostopem przez Galaktykę". Seria od samego początku zyskała sobie wielką popularność, głównie z powodu absurdalnego, acz inteligentnego humoru Adamsa. We wrześniu 1979 ukazała się drukiem pierwsza część powieści wzorowanej na motywach słuchowiska radiowego pod tym samym tytułem, a w dwa lata później telewizja BBC wyemitowała pierwszy odcinek serialu telewizyjnego. W następnych latach historia bohatera "Autostopem przez Galaktykę" rozrosła się do rozmiarów książkowej "trylogii w pięciu częściach". Również dwie inne powieści Adamsa, poświęcone przygodom nietypowego detektywa - "Holistyczna agencja detektywistyczna Dirka Gently’ego" i "Długi mroczny podwieczorek dusz" - zdobyły sporą popularność. Razem z zoologiem Markiem Cawardine napisał też "Ostatnia okazja, by ujrzeć" - książkę o ginących gatunkach zwierząt. Po śmierci pisarza ukazała się antologia nie wydanych wcześniej tekstów zatytułowana "Łosoś zwątpienia". Adams był też pionierem stosowania nowoczesnych technologii - używał e-maila i Usenetu, zanim stały się popularne, przewidywał rozwój hipertekstu, był fanem komputerów Macintosh i wszelkich gadżetów. Założył zbliżony charakterem do Wikipedii portal H2G2 - przewodnik po Galaktyce tworzony wspólnie przez społeczność internetową. Koncern IBM nadał swemu komputerowi szachowemu nazwę Deep Thought na cześć maszyny z "Autostopem przez Galaktykę", zaś portal AltaVista nazwał swój serwis tłumaczący Babel Fish, zainspirowany rybką-tłumaczem z tej samej książki. Zmarł na zawał serca w trakcie prac nad wyprodukowaniem filmu opartego na motywach pierwszej części cyklu "Autostopem przez Galaktykę". Film ten trafił na ekrany w 2005 r. Fani Adamsa obchodzą rocznicę jego śmierci jako Dzień Ręcznika. Istnieją dwie asteroidy nazwane na cześć Adamsa: *18610 Arthurdent to mała asteroida w głównym pasie. Odkrył ją 7 lutego 1998 Felix Hormuth. Jej nazwa pochodzi od Arthura Denta, głównego bohatera cyklu Autostopem przez Galaktykę. Nazwa została oficjalnie ogłoszona 9 maja 2001, dwa dni przed śmiercią Adamsa. *25 stycznia 2005 ogłoszono, że asteroida 2001 DA42 została na jego cześć nazwana 25924 Douglasadams. Wybrano właśnie tę asteroidę, ponieważ 2001 to rok śmierci Adamsa, DA to jego inicjały, zaś liczba 42 odgrywa znaczącą rolę w cyklu Autostopem przez Galaktykę. (pl)
