- The Dock is a prominent feature of the graphical user interface of macOS. It is used to launch applications and to switch between running applications. The Dock is also a prominent feature of macOS's predecessor NeXTSTEP and OPENSTEP operating systems. The earliest known implementations of a dock are found in operating systems such as RISC OS and NeXTSTEP. iOS has its own version of the Dock for the iPhone and iPod Touch, as does iPadOS for the iPad. Apple applied for a US patent for the design of the Dock in 1999 and was granted the patent in October 2008, nearly a decade later. Any application can be dragged and dropped onto the Dock to add it to the dock, and any application can be dragged from the dock to remove it, except for Finder and Trash, which are permanent fixtures as the leftmost and rightmost items (or highest and lowest items if the Dock is vertically oriented), respectively. Part of the macOS Core Services, Dock.app is located at /System/Library/CoreServices/. (en)

Cette fonctionnalité est cependant courante sur d'autres systèmes d'exploitations, tels que Microsoft Windows et Linux. Il s'agit d'une zone située par défaut en bas de l'écran, qui contient toutes les icônes des applications, dossiers ou fichiers favoris de l'utilisateur. Cette zone contient également la corbeille. Le concept du Dock a été popularisé par NeXTSTEP, le système d'exploitation ayant notamment servi de base à Mac OS X. Toutefois, son origine remonte au système d'exploitation Arthur sorti en 1997 et ancêtre de RISC OS. Le dock s'appelait alors "Iconbar". Les systèmes de fichiers montés et d'autres choses (comme l'imprimante) étaient iconifiés à gauche de l'Iconbar. La partie droite était, quant à elle, réservée aux applications en exécution. La parola deriva dall'uso comune in inglese di "dock", che si riferisce a un'area in cui persone o oggetti vengono depositati in attesa di essere prelevati da un mezzo di trasporto (per esempio il molo di un porto o la fermata di un bus). In senso figurato, quindi, si può dire che le applicazioni nel "dock" sono "ormeggiate" in attesa del prossimo utilizzo da parte dell'utente. La sua implementazione più nota è quella integrata nell'interfaccia grafica di macOS ma, seppur con funzioni diverse, è utilizzato anche nei sistemi NEXTSTEP, OPENSTEP, AmigaOS e distribuzioni GNU/Linux. Dockan sitter längst nere på skärmen (man kan dock ändra det om man vill ha den på sidan) och hjälper användaren att få tillgång till applikationer snabbt, den är alltid synlig på skärmen då program och fönster anpassas efter den. Dockan har så kallade "separatorer" som hjälper användaren att sortera sina appar i den. På Iphone kan man endast ha fyra applikationer eller mindre på dockan samtidigt, men på Mac-datorer kan man i princip ha hur många som helst. På Ipad kan man ha 6 stycken. (sv)
