- Zubní protéza je snímatelná protetická náhrada řešící ztrátu vlastních zubů. Současné studie ukazují, že ztráta vlastních zubů a nutnost následného zhotovení snímatelných náhrad (protéz) jsou nejčastějšími stomatologickými potížemi lidí v důchodovém věku, a spolu se stárnutím populace nabývá tato oblast na stále větším významu.K pevným náhradám patří: kořenové nástavby, solokorunky a fixní můstky. Snímatelné zubní náhrady neboli protézy pak dělíme na částečné a celkové. Částečné snímatelné náhrady používáme tam, kde máme k dispozici ještě použitelné vlastní zuby, ale pevnou náhradu již zhotovit nelze. Částečná náhrada se skládá z pryskyřičné báze, dále obsahuje umělé pryskyřičné zuby a lité kotevní prvky, které ji stabilizují v ústech. S výhodou se používají i tzv. skeletové náhrady, které obsahují litý patrový či podjazykový třmen.U bezzubých čelistí zhotovujeme celkové neboli totální protézy. Aby tyto protézy dobře držely (adherovaly) v ústech, musí jejich vnitřní plocha přesně kopírovat protézní lože. (cs)

Prosthodontics is the dental specialty that focuses on dental prostheses. Such prostheses are used to rehabilitate mastication (chewing), improve aesthetics, and aid speech. A dental prosthesis may be held in place by connecting to teeth or dental implants, by suction, or by being held passively by surrounding muscles. Like other types of prostheses, they can either be fixed permanently or removable; fixed prosthodontics and removable dentures are made in many variations. Permanently fixed dental prostheses use dental adhesive or screws, to attach to teeth or dental implants. Removal prostheses may use friction against parallel hard surfaces and undercuts of adjacent teeth or dental implants, suction using the mucous retention (with or without aid from denture adhesives), and by exploiting the surrounding muscles and anatomical contours of the jaw to passively hold in place. - La prothèse dentaire est un dispositif dentaire remplaçant une ou plusieurs dents absentes et, si nécessaire, les structures anatomiques associées. La première prothèse dentaire connue date de 2 600 ans ; c'est une invention étrusque. Elle remplaçait trois incisives supérieures par une dent de vache retaillée et marquée de traits verticaux pour simuler les dents naturelles, fixée aux dents avoisinantes (incisive restante, et canines et prémolaires) par un fil d'or. L'acte prothétique permettra de reconstituer les dents trop délabrées (à la suite d'une carie ou d'une fracture) grâce à des couronnes, en métal ou en céramique. Il permet également de remplacer des dents manquantes, soit par un moyen fixe (bridge), soit par des appareils amovibles dits châssis métalliques ou stellites. Le dentiste travaille en association avec un prothésiste dentaire. Ce dernier travaille dans un laboratoire, avec un matériel très spécifique. Une prothèse ne dispense en aucune manière d'une hygiène buccodentaire rigoureuse. Les dents, même artificiellement couronnées, peuvent se carier à la jonction entre la prothèse et la dent naturelle.
