Después de la gira que duró 2 años y medio para promover su tercer álbum "Tragic Kingdom" (1995), No Doubt compuso una docena de duras canciones para su oportunidad para trabajar con el productor Glen Ballard. La creación del álbum, que duró 2 años, llegó a convertirse en un proceso de disensión con la banda, que dio como resultado, problemas con el sello discográfico. El álbum fue completado después de que la banda volviera al estudio para grabar 2 de las canciones que llegaron a ser sencillos del álbum. C'est le premier album auquel Eric Stefani, le frère de la chanteuse Gwen Stefani et le fondateur du groupe, n'a pas collaboré (il a quitté le groupe en 1994). Return of Saturn a été écrit après deux ans et demi de tournée pour l'album Tragic Kingdom, qui a remporté un énorme succès planétaire et a emmené Gwen Stefani, Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont et Adrian Young aux quatre coins du monde. It marked the band's first album as a quartet, following the departure of original keyboardist Eric Stefani in 1994. After touring for two and a half years to promote their breakthrough third studio album, Tragic Kingdom (1995), No Doubt wrote several dozen songs for its follow-up and eventually settled on working with producer Glen Ballard. Creating the album became a tumultuous process lasting two years, during which there was dissension among band members and between the band and its label. The album was completed after the band returned to the studio and recorded what became two of its singles. The album maintains the ska punk and reggae influences of the band's previous work, but with slower, more ballad-like songs. The lyrics to many of the songs describe singer Gwen Stefani's pining for a more domestic life, contrasting that with her commitment to a music career. Upon its release, Return of Saturn received favorable reviews from music critics, although several of them were divided over its different sound to its predecessor. It debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 but was unable to measure up to the sales of Tragic Kingdom. The album spawned four singles, only one of which charted on the Billboard Hot 100. Klimat albumu w stosunku do poprzednika nie zmienia się zbytnio, skupia się głównie na pragnieniu stabilizacji życiowej, problemach sercowych, chęci posiadania rodziny, wejścia w stały związek. Tytuł albumu związany jest z obiegiem Saturna - trwającego w przybliżeniu 29 lat. Tyle lat właśnie kończyła Gwen podczas pracy nad krążkiem i jest on w pewien sposób podsumowaniem jej dotychczasowych życiowych dokonań. Album nie powtórzył komercyjnego sukcesu poprzednika sprzedając się w liczbie 2 milionów egzemplarzy, zaś przez krytyków uznawany jest za najlepszy i najbardziej ambitny album stworzony przez No Doubt.
