La première formation stable consistait en Don Doty au chant, Eric Meyer et Jim Durkin aux guitares, Rob Yahn à la basse et Jack Schwarz à la batterie. Une démo figura sur la compilation Metal Massacre IV en 1985 et le groupe enregistra plus tard cette année-là son premier album We Have Arrived. Gene Hoglan rejoignit Dark Angel peu de temps avant la sortie de l'album et l'année suivante est enregistré le deuxième album Darkness Descends sur le label Combat Records. Rob Yan partit peu de temps après la sortie de l'album (remplacé par Mike Gonzalez) suivi par Don Doty à la fin de la tournée de promotion. Incertain de la direction à prendre, le groupe fit une pose avant de refaire surface avec Gene Hoglan s'affirmant comme principal force créatrice du groupe. Après avoir embauché Ron Rinehart comme nouveau chanteur, Dark Angel enregistra l'album Leave Scars (1989) qui valut à sa musique l'étiquette originale de thrash metal progressif. Brett Eriksen remplace Jim Durkin en 1989. Un autre break suivit puis le groupe enregistra son quatrième album (et dernier en date) Time Does Not Heal. Sorti en plein déclin du thrash metal, l'album peut-être trop éloigné du thrash ultra-rapide et ultrabrutal qu'attendaient les fans de Darkness Descends se vendit mal même si la critique loua sa technicité et sa complexité. Enfin, après le départ de Ron Rinehart, Gene Hoglan décida de dissoudre le groupe et rejoignit le groupe Death avec qui il enregistra plusieurs albums. Le groupe s'est brièvement reformé en 2002 mais son avenir reste incertain. (fr)
