- Damara, damaqua o dama (en llengua hoekhoegowab: ǂNūkhoen, literalment "Gent Negra") anomenats pels alemanys com Berg Damara (Damara de la Muntanya, en referència al fet que vivien als turons i llocs muntanyosos; també els anomenaven daman o damaqua) és un grup ètnic del centre i sud de Namíbia que són un 8,5% de la població. La seva llengua és el khoekhoe (el mateix que el poble nama) El seu origen constitueix una incògnita per als antropòlegs, perquè comparteixen l'idioma d'espetecs dels san i els nama (els namaqua), però no estan relacionats amb aquests més enllà de ser veïns i compartir l'idioma, sent totes les seves altres característiques similars als bantú que van venir de l'est (aparença i cultura). Gran part dels seus costums i tradicions agrícoles es van perdre després de ser enviats al seu propi territori, el bantustán de Damaraland, durant el període de l'aplicació de les polítiques de "desenvolupament separat" de l'apartheid, quan Sud-àfrica ocupava i administrava Àfrica del Sud-oest. Això es va deure al fet que aquest territori, de terres pobres i pluges irregulars, no era adequat per a l'agricultura. - The Damara, plural Damaran (Khoekhoegowab: ǂNūkhoen, Black people, German: Bergdamara, referring to their extended stay in hilly and mountainous sites, also called at various times the Daman or the Damaqua) are an ethnic group who make up 8.5% of Namibia's population. They speak the Khoekhoe language (like the Nama people) and the majority live in the northwestern regions of Namibia, however they are also found widely across the rest of the country. Genetic studies have found that Damara are closely related to neighbouring Himba and Herero people, consistent with an origin from Bantu speakers who shifted to a different language and culture. Their name in their own language is the "Daman" (where the "-n" is just the Khoekhoe plural ending). The name "Damaqua" stems from the addition of the Khoekhoe suffix "-qua/khwa" meaning "people" (found in the names of other Southern African peoples like the Namaqua and the Griqua). Prior to 1870 the hunter-gatherer Damaran occupied most of central Namibia they used to practice pastoralism with sheep and cattle, but were also agriculturalist planting pumpkins, corn, tobacco. The Damaran were also copper-smiths known for their ability to melt copper and used to make ornaments, jewellery, knives and spear heads out of iron. The Damaran just like the Sān believed in communal ownership of land meaning that no individual owned land as God had given land to everyone. Thus, rather than one person owning good grazing land and another seeking out an existence, all would live in harmony. It was for this reason that many were displaced when the Nama and Herero began to occupy this area in search of better grazing. Thereafter the Damara were dominated by the Namaqua and the Herero, most living as servants in their households. In 1960, the South African government forced the Damara into the bantustan of Damaraland, an area of poor soil and irregular rainfall. About half of their numbers still occupy Damaraland. (en)

Su origen constituye una incógnita para los antropólogos, pues comparten el idioma de chasquidos de los san y los nama (el namaqua), pero no están relacionados con estos más allá de ser vecinos y compartir el idioma, siendo todas sus demás características similares a los bantú que vinieron del este (apariencia y cultura). Esto hace pensar que puedan haber sido el primer grupo bantú en llegar a la actual Namibia procedente de territorios al noreste. Hasta la década de 1870 los damara ocupaban gran parte del centro de Namibia, pero se vieron desplazados luego de sucesivas invasiones de grupos nama desde el sur, y de herero desde el norte. Los damaras se dedicaban principalmente a la agricultura, aunque también criaban ganado. Gran parte de sus costumbres y tradiciones agrícolas se perdieron luego de ser enviados a su propio territorio, el bantustán de Damaralandia, durante el periodo de la aplicación de las políticas de "desarrollo separado" del apartheid, cuando Sudáfrica ocupaba y administraba África del Sudoeste (como se llamaba en ese momento la actual Namibia). Якщо на півночі дамара говорять на відокремлених говірках (ч'акхой, л'ауб, сесфонтейн) мови нама, то в центральному регіоні їхня мова піддалася більш сильному впливу власне нама і входить тепер в центральну діалектну зону разом з діалектами самих нама. З середини XVIII століття на землях дамара оселилися гереро, з якими вони жили мирно. На початку XX століття багато гереро були винищені, але і зараз їх досить багато серед дамара.
