| - Conscious hip hop or socially conscious hip-hop is a type of hip hop that focuses on social issues. It is not necessarily overtly political, but it discusses social issues and conflicts. Themes of conscious hip hop include religion, aversion to violence, African American culture and advancement, the economy, or simple depictions of life in the projects/ghetto that reveal the struggle of ordinary people. Grandmaster Flash's "The Message" was an early and hugely influential political and conscious hip hop track, decrying the poverty, violence, and dead-end lives of the black youth of the time.
The audience for conscious rap is largely underground. Most conscious hip hop artists have not attained the same level of commercial success as mainstream hip-hop , though there are some notable exceptions to this.
However, some of these artists have criticized the name. Mos Def criticizes the label, saying:

Schweizer Hip-Hop, der sich u.a. dadurch vom deutschen Rap unterscheidet, dass er Dialektsprache verwendet, ist oft sozialkritisch motiviert. Zu erwähnen sind hier zum Beispiel Breitbild, Greis, X-Chaibä und auch der aus der französischsprachigen Schweiz kommende Stress.
Auch die Schwedische Hip-Hop Gruppe Looptroop ist dem Conscious Rap zuzuordnen. (de)

- Świadomy hip-hop (ang. Conscious hip-hop) - podgatunek nurtu alternatywnego hip-hopu, który skupia się na problematyce społecznej. Świadomy hip-hop tym różni się od politycznego hip-hopu, że niekoniecznie kryje w sobie przekaz polityczny, chociaż podobnie jak tamten koncentruje się na kwestiach społecznych (np. rasizm, brak perspektyw mniejszości narodowych i etnicznych, bezdomność, bieda, przemoc, seksizm, wyzysk ekonomiczny i ucisk społeczny, ale także na rozważaniach z zakresu religii czy ekonomii) i społecznych konfliktach. Pierwszym w historii utworem z nurtu świadomego i politycznego hip-hopu był The Message (Przekaz) (z 1982 r.) Grandmaster Flasha, potępiający przemoc, biedę i życie na pograniczu śmierci młodych Afroamerykanów w tym czasie.
Artyści uprawiający gatunek świadomego hip-hopu nie odnoszą takiego komercyjnego i finansowego sukcesu jak wykonawcy z głównego nurtu hip-hopu (mainstreamu), zaliczając się do gatunku twórców undergroundowych.
