En ce qui concerne le terme de « divination », il apparaît à Rome avec Cicéron, il s’agit par conséquent d’une notion récente. Selon lui c’est une croyance ancienne remontant aux temps héroïques. La divination est appelée par les Grecs mantikê signifiant mantique, c'est à dire une faculté de connaître à l'avance l'avenir. D'où le nom mantis donné à toute personne qui prédit l'avenir.Ce nom provient de la racine mainomai qui est utilisée lorsqu'une personne est prise de délire. On peut aussi considérer que cette personne est mise hors de soi par la divinité. Par ailleurs le signe divinatoire pouvait être appelé sêmeion car son interprétation exigeait de la part du devin des connaissances et des techniques. Nous verrons donc spécifiquement, dans une première partie la divination cléromantique, puis dans une seconde partie le travail portera sur sa diffusion et les questions qu’elle peut engendrer. (fr)
